Day 47: A short one
I've been fighting to stave off a cold all week, and yesterday's exploits may have pushed me over the edge. I spent part of the overnight coughing up a lung. I felt weak and sinuses were raging when the alarm rang at 7:30, so I shut it off, rolled over, and went back to sleep as Tony Crocker snuck out of the house and drove up to Snowbasin, fearing holiday crowds at Alta.
I still wanted to get some turns in, for it was a gorgeous day with temps in the 50s in the Valley (near 40 on the mountain) and sunny skies, so I pulled into the Wildcat parking lot at 12:15 pm. Southerly winds are already honking ahead of the next storm system, and there are high clouds already on the western horizon, but it was still sunny and beautiful over the Wasatch as I booted up and headed up Collins.
It didn't feel much like a holiday weekend. I love it when I get to tell Tony that I was right. I had maybe a 90-second line to board Collins, and Sugarloaf was pretty much ready to ski on. Only Supreme had a liftline, and that was perhaps 5 minutes long.
Marc_C has six visitors, and Pat was skiing with them, so I hooked up with them at Alf's as they dined on lunch. I stopped to eat on the way up, so I pretty much sat there looking green, wondering if I should really be on the mountain today.
I took three more runs with them: 1 Sugarloaf, and 2 on Supreme. Razorback was perhaps in the best shape that I've seen it all year, covered in soft, chalky snow with some small bumps on the steeper spots. Ditto for Cabin Hill above the Supreme Access road. Supreme Challenge was filled with soft blow-in, another score, and No. 9 trees provided soft snow in the afternoon sunshine. Baby Bear had some stiff loose snow, but was still skiable. The same held on the bottom of White Squaw, with W.S.'s upper reaches draped in soft chalk.
It was clear, though, that I have no energy today. I headed back to the truck with my tail between my legs, popped two more Comtrex, and headed home.
Tonight/tomorrow morning's storm is expected to drop another 6 to 10.
