"Free refills. All day."
Amazing. Simply amazing. Alta opened the holiday weekend with new snow yesterday, and followed it up today with another 17".
IIRC the forecast this morning, it was for 3-6". But it snowed all day. It positively puked snow all day, right up until 4:00 when it finally tapered off. The net effect was that instead of getting tracked up by mid-morning like it usually does, we were still skiing freshies right up until 4 when I finally gave up and headed with the gang for après-ski beers at Goldminer's Daughter. We're talking thigh-deep where it had blown in.
Liftlines user Kirbyvv was here with his family, visiting from the edge of the Adirondacks. I won't bother recounting where we went -- it was all good. The trick of the day was to search out trees for definition. Our one run down Yellow Trail proved that we had to stick to where we could actually see where we were going. A notable run of the day was my second run of the day down Eagle's Nest.
Areas like Devil's Castle and Ballroom/Baldy Shoulder remained closed for avi concerns. Even the Germania Return from the top of Sugarloaf was closed, apparently due to concerns of East Baldy sliding. It didn't matter, for even with the holiday crowds there was enough to go around. Holiday crowds weren't a concern, save for trying to find a 1pm table at Alf's for lunch. We again gave up, heading down to Albion Grill for a bite to eat.
Little Cottonwood Canyon road remained open, save for Hellgate where traffic was diverted via the Alta bypass road.
I managed to only log 14,800 verts despite skiing from the 9:15 opening bell to 4:00. No matter, though -- every one of those verts was quality. Alta has now logged over 450 inches thus far this season, and has a mid-mountain settled base of a staggering 155 inches.
Once again, the mountain was insufficiently photogenic for pictures. However, there are a couple below from the Wildcat base area this morning. Kirbyvv had an amazing introduction to Utah skiing.
