Day 33: Keeping up with the Energizer Bunny
Effects of the head cold lingered. I woke up at 7, popped a Sudafed and started getting dressed. It wasn't clear if my energy level was going to be low as it was on Saturday, but I'd try again regardless.
Mira and Sima were back from Jackson for one more day in Utah before flying home. Ironically, it was dry their whole week in Utah, and when they went to Jackson for two days it snowed a foot in Utah and no more than a dusting or so at Jackson. Lousy timing. The day's posse also included the usual Tele Jon, Marc_C, Pat and Amy. Skidog was in the Sunday doghouse.
It was also snowing at varying intensities all day, with more frequent bursts of heavier snow in the afternoon. With a good 3-4 inches accumulated throughout the day it just kept getting better and better. Roads up the canyon were simply wet until you got to the D gate, when it instantly shifted over to a solid glaze of ice. Some apparently didn't notice the change, including one small SUV that veered off the road and rolled repeatedly down the embankment adjacent to Goldminer's Daughter nearly all the way to the Wildcat parking lot, in full view of all of us standing in the Collins liftline. Reportedly all inside were OK.
Where did we go? Everywhere and anywhere. Highlights were a wind-groomed Backside, an untracked out-of-bounds shot on Patsy Marley (only Mira and myself, as all the others save for Marc_C weren't carrying avalanche gear) and Hourglass Chute. While my energy lagged in the morning, I took the Goliaths back out to the truck and grabbed my G3 Reverends instead, as the lighter and turnier skis would require less effort. Gradually I built up a second wind and started feeling better.
The group gradually shrank all day by attrition. Tele Jon split around lunch time to get caught up on some work. Sima hit the road for the airport at 3 pm. We lost Marc_C a short time thereafter, and Pat and Amy by 3:45. My legs screamed "uncle" by 4:20, but Mira -- the Energizer Bunny -- wanted one last run before the lifties went home. Somehow after 9 straight days of skiing she was still going opening bell to closing bell. She came back to the house for dinner with Mrs. Admin and The Kid before heading off to the airport for a red-eye back to NYC.
No photos, no video.
