Day 38.

It was a shortened day -- my visitor from Tampa developed a moderate case of HAPE (high-altitude pulmonary edema) yesterday, and when the fluid in the lungs hit by 1 pm I had to evacuate him to lower altitude.

Meanwhile, my other houseguest (from Detroit), Marc_C and Tony Crocker kept skiing until just about the closing bell. Tony will be able to report more when he gets back this coming week.

In the meantime, for the runs that I enjoyed, we found cut-up snow from this week's storms. Our first run was a fast cruiser down Razorback and Roller Coaster, both featuring fine, soft groomed snow. Back up Sugarloaf, and it was down to Cecret Saddle, where Todd first found himself struggling with the effects of altitude.

As a result, he and I went up Supreme and on a cruiser down Big Dipper to Rock and Roll, while the rest of the crew headed out to Catherine's. Todd was really starting to fade, though, so he went down to Alf's to rest while I waited for the crew at the base of Supreme. John skied down to Alf's to check on Todd, while Marc_C, Tony and I went up and skied the Spiny Chutes, diving into one of them that's guarded by a rock entrance to try to score fresher snow...and finding it.

At this point we all went down to Alf's. I sent Tony and Marc_C on to Susie's Trees, while Todd, John and I rode Sugarloaf and took the Germ Return to Mambo just to get down to GMD. Todd struggled with the effects, stopping often to rest. John went back up Collins while I sat it out with Todd in GMD, where he stared like a zombie while I got something to eat. I tried unsuccessfully to get him to eat as well. We all regrouped in GMD, where the common advice from all of us finally convinced Todd to evac to lower altitude. Todd and I drove back to the house while the others kept skiing.

We've been pumping him with diamox ever since, and he seems to be feeling better this morning. We'll try Snowbird today and see how he feels.

Yesterday was overcast with snow showers throughout the day, so I didn't take any photos. The same forecast is in effect today, with a 70% chance of 3-6" between 5 am and 5 pm, and a 60% chance of the same between 5 pm and 5 am tonight, although Tony just called from Snowbird and reports that it's fairly clear up there right now.
