Day 45: Fun in the sun

If we can't have a powder day, I'll take warm and sunny, which is precisely what we got on Saturday.

It was a lazy day. The posse, however, was positively huge. In addition to the usual suspects (Marc_C, Skidog, Pat, Tele Jon, Amy, etc.) was had a bunch of visitors: Denis from DC, Dick from Rochester, jtran and his folks from VT, three more from CT, two more from NYC, etc. The massive group stuck together for a few runs before splintering, which is about two runs longer than I'd expected, so it was fun doing mass high-speed cruisers down Devil's Elbow, Rollercoaster, Razorback and Rock 'n Roll. Groomers were downright fun, still sporting winter snow but delightfully edgeable.

We ended up splintering when Tele Jon and I brought the CT visitors into Catherine's Area, which was cut-up crud that hadn't fully set up, but was a bit stiffer than I'd expected. One of the CT visitors who had been ripping around the groomers suddenly faced challenges in the ungroomed snow. On top of that another CT visitor on teles, Ken, broke a binding cartridge, so all in all, that was a 90-minute Catherine's lap as we coaxed one down and another had the aforementioned binding issues. Whew!

We regrouped for an early lunch on the GMD patio, where they set up an impromptu BBQ. I spent a few runs after lunch with Denis, Dick and Ken in Eagle's Nest (perhaps the best ungroomed snow of the day with steep, chalky dry snow that sloughed off with each turn) before calling it a day around 2:45 p.m. when the siren song of beers in the sun on the GMD patio was too strong to resist. A few kept going to the very end, including Ken who had one of his skis rip loose in North Rustler and take a ride down the hill over the cliff band at the choke, thereafter spending an hour looking for the thing. Rough equipment day for Ken!

I didn't take any photos. I wasn't inspired to while skiing, although the ample time on the deck would have been a good opportunity.

We gathered that evening at Lugano with Tony and his friend Richard, the CT crew, Amy and Tele Jon for a fine dinner and fine conversation well into the night. A good day!
