Day 55: Skiin' with my honey

Did you read yesterday's Alta report from me? Today was nearly identical. Weather was a carbon copy, save that there was an ever-so-slight breeze today. Temperatures were the same. Skies were the same. The blazing sun was the same.

Backside closed by 11:15 today, followed by more patrol bombing. So did Devil's Castle, without the bombing. It sure was amusing seeing actual bumps in some of the more popular lines in the Castle.

Skiing with my other half meant that we arrived at the ripe alpine start hour of 12:30 after fighting to get her up there. No matter for the start time, though -- usually skiing with her means taking three runs and quitting for the day. Today, though, she skied 10 runs and 13,010 verts! Every time I suggested that we quit for the day to retire to the Goldminer's patio for some beer, she'd ask for another run. We didn't stop skiing until 4:30.

We pretty much stuck to groomers today, starting on Collins and taking two Sugarloaf runs before meeting the posse on the deck at Alf's. Most headed for Collins thereafter, but Marc_C joined us for a ride up Sugarloaf (bumped into lookin'4powder there -- great seeing you, Jeff!) and down to Supreme for a run each on Rock 'n Roll and Big Dipper.

We then headed back up Sugarloaf to get over to Collins ourselves, and skied multiple laps on Wildcat and Collins. Marc_C stuck with us throughout. Patricia's confidence got a big boost today, and she skied lower High Rustler multiple times, and I even got her down the steeper pitch of Spring Valley. She was speedy today, too, and even when I amped it up to moderate speeds I'd stop and she was right behind me.

The biggest shocker was when she said she'd come out again next weekend if the weather was similar.

Snow was just as it was yesterday -- soft, spring-like, and just plain fun. Plenty of cover on primary lines, but some tight spots like the Saddle Traverse and the High T continue to melt out quickly.

Good thing that pattern change is coming Tuesday.

Somehow, I carried the camera around all day and failed to take a single photo.

And the above applies to Alta on March 19th too! This is the warmest skiing I've ever done at Alta since April '86--except this is a month earlier. East Greeley gate was closed all day. Unlike the past two days, the patrol kept quiet and threw no bombs.

As is usual for spring skiing, the day began with a firm surface and moved to a workable soft surface by midday. As the day advanced, the wind also picked up but it didn't seem to slow the developing corn and slop. For my wife the conditions were perfect for demong skis. Her mission is to find a suitable replacement for her Volkl Snow Rangers. She tried out 5 pairs and seems to be deciding between the Dynastar Legend Powder and the Head Sweet Fat Thangs.

At 4:30 I took off to take a run down Alfs. Although Piss Corner is usually rough, I was surprised to find only the mat (with rocks). In addition, the higher entrance to Alfs was dirt. Rather than take my skis off, I dropped lower and considered a descent through the trees, but after a few turns, I noticed a narrow path that allowed easy access to Rustler. I then took the lowest entry to Alfs that I've ever used.

After skiing Alta for three days, I must report that although conditions are good, the snow levels are shockingly low for this time of year. The storm expected for tomorrow night is predicted to increase depths by 3"-9". At best this is a good start...

Cheers,
Jeff
