Day 46: Disappointing.
I'm a bit late in getting this out. Normally, 4" of new snow on Monday morning wouldn't be enough to get me to head up the canyon on Monday afternoon, but this isn't a normal winter.
So I found myself driving up to Alta for a few Collins laps at the end of the day on Monday. What I found was rudely disappointing. For starters, the new snow was the consistency of elephant snot -- it appeared that the snow line was somewhere around 7500 feet. Next, despite its heftiness it wasn't nearly dense enough to keep you off the refrozen base. Combine that with the fact that our dry spell has been so long that everything that isn't groomed is a bump field, and it was really some unpleasant skiing. I didn't last long before turning tail and heading home.
