Day 56: More spring

After running to the Black Diamond gear swap at 7:30 a.m., picking up my other half at the airport at 10:15, and helping my buddy Todd get his boat out of my side yard to go to Jordanelle Reservoir (below Deer Valley), I finally pulled into Alta's Wildcat lot at 12:45. It definitely felt peculiar to go skiing while Todd was going boating.

The late start was acceptable, though, for it gave things time to soften through the morning. Acidchrist was already roaming the mountain with Amy and his patrol buds from Upstate NY. A quick phone call confirmed that they were at Supreme, and I buzzed up Collins and skied across to meet them all at the bottom of the chair.

We hit No. 9 trees, which still weren't quite ready for prime time, although the softening had begun. The gang hadn't yet eaten, and hunger pangs were setting in, so we all buzzed down to Sugarloaf and across to Goldminer's Daughter, travels that brought us into contact with Bob Dangerous who reported good things in Main Chute. We made plans to hike after lunch, but it became readily apparent that we wouldn't make it to the gate prior to the 3 pm closing.

We kept searching out warm faces, and found perfect corn on West Rustler in Jitterbug and No Name. Good times and good friends didn't wrap up until 6 pm over beers on the Goldminer's Daughter patio.

Total verts skied: approx. 10,400
Pictures taken: none, although I lugged the camera around all day.

Wow, it took me 20 minutes to get this far on FTO. I don't know why it is so slow today. It had been slow, but now it is slower.

Wished you had taken some photos. I wanted to see the bags under AcidChrist's eyes from his 36 hour drive to ski on saturday.

Oh, and I'm pretty sure his patrol buddies are from The Canyons in Park City where AC used to work. He didn't say that anyone from NY could get out there, so I believe those were his PC guys.

Nope, New York.

Slow times are due to the sporadic issues we're experiencing. Tonight's scheduled maintenance window is a further eddort to diagnose the cause.

thanks for the update....hows the cover off the groomed(supreme, high-t, cirque and mineral)....i know a big storms coming tommrow but how does the first 10 days of april look for snow?

thanks in advance

Most of Supreme is fine, although the Spiny Chutes are narrower than normal, and the entrances to Supreme Chute and Tower 12 are rocky. Mineral is fine -- prevailing winds dropped a lot of extra snow back there this winter. Some of the Upper Cirque lines are a bit more sporting than normal, and the T is gone at Sunspot Ridge save for the lowermost line -- with a bit of shoveling.

That makes things sound worse than they are. This storm should help immensely, and while I don't have a crystal ball, I'd imagine that the first 10 days of April should be fine.

Here's the High-T at Sunspot, Saturday, 3/24, 4pm, before the 3/27 storm.
