Day 48: Main Chute!
9:15 a.m.: Load Collins with Bobby Danger, AmyZ and Telejon. Groomers are still rock hard. Vibration from the refrozen corduroy rattles every joint in my body. Skis can't leave a mark in it. Anything ungroomed is out of the question.
10:00 a.m.: Have coffee at Baldy Brews. Wait for things to soften. Contemplate making a dentist appointment to replace fillings lost during the first couple of runs. Make the others impatient by shopping online with my phone. Spend too much money on new summer camping gear from Steep and Cheap while sipping latté. Curse their business model for forcing me to buy still more gear. Others curse me for holding up the show. Latté goes cold because I'm too busy trying to put items in my shopping cart before time runs out.
10:30 a.m.: Try Backside. Not really ready. It needs more time to cook. Maybe by the next run. Telejon declares it "al dente," thereby reminding me of the need to schedule that dentist appointment.
11:00 a.m.: TheOtherAmy and Skidog arrive. Try Backside again. It's now nearly there. C'mon sun! We find Kingslug.
11:20 a.m.: Backside is now past prime. Really??? When in the hell did that happen? We were only gone for 20 minutes!
12:00 p.m.: Spot the ever-elusive Marc_C, who reportedly doesn't ski, atop Germania Pass. Consider phoning BobMc and filing a report, but decide against it. We all ski down to Watson Shelter for a burger on the deck. Marc_C apparently both skis and eats, too.
12:30 p.m.: Mira and Sima finally show up for a true alpine start. Finish lunch on the deck watching skiers ripping Main Chute. Really, it looks awesome, and I haven't been atop Baldy all year. Kingslug whines about sore feet.
1:00 p.m.: Dig packs out of vehicles and fill hydration bladders at Goldminers Daughter. Wanting to ski a second day this weekend on bad knees, Telejon splits. We replace him with both mrgskier and Arnie, who are somehow eating in the dry sauna masquerading as the GMD cafe. They like our plan. Abby will come with us as far as the gate. Kingslug is still whining.
1:15 p.m.: Stand atop Germania Pass. A refreshing breeze blows from the southwest. It's just a gorgeous day to be out in the mountains. Kingslug finally declares that his panties are free of his vajayjay. I check his backside and don't see any bunching. He's in.
1:30 p.m.: Ride Sugarloaf as Mira and Sima regale us with tales of Miki's digestive issues. Arrive at the lift's top station none too soon.
1:45 p.m.: We click out of our skis at Sugarloaf Pass, load them onto our packs and start booting. Where did that breeze go?
2:15 p.m.: Slow and steady brings us to the summit in just under 30 minutes. We enjoy the summit of Baldy for about another half an hour. The breeze reappears, chilling the body as sweaty t-shirts evaporate. Wonder where it was during the hike. Surmise that its maliciousness was intentional.
2:45 p.m.: We've jerked around atop the summit just long enough for the day's first clouds to move in and obscure the sun ](*,) , and we drop into Main Chute. Honestly, it's smooth, soft and creamy, albeit a bit tighter than usual, but just what the doctor ordered.
3:30 p.m.: Back down now in Ballroom. It's really sticky. I fight to keep it together just long enough to get to the base, for my legs are shot. The lower, the stickier. Arnie and mrgskier keep soldiering on, for Arnie heads back to Vermont tomorrow after spending about a month here. Mira and Sima take their 4-year-old skiing on Sunnyside. Kingslug once again has an impacted vajayjay:
And the rest of us split.
It was a one-run afternoon, but oh, what a run!
