Day 49: Corn perfection.

Sunday dawned bright and blue once again. It was a few degrees colder than it was on Saturday morning, so it took a bit longer for things to soften (and that meant another pricey coffee stop, this time with ~$400 spent at Steep and Cheap). However, I'm not quite sure if it was because it was colder, because the snow went through just one more freeze/thaw cycle, or a combination of both, but we never got the superglue on Sunday that we had on Saturday afternoon. The snow corned up perfectly and stayed that way right to the end -- and beyond.

Have you guys already broken out the golf clubs?

They're hoping you don't notice that the skiing mostly stinks out that way this year. Although Alta does have a big 2" YTD more snowfall than Loveland and 4" more than Copper... Might just be enough to get Admin to take up his 2nd favorite game - Flog.

Over my dead body! I did ski this weekend, both days. I've been busy so I haven't yet had a chance to post, although I will readily admit that I got bored each day and left before things truly softened. I've also pretty much come to grips with the fact that this season really will not redeem itself. I will still ski every weekend through April 26, and thereafter will welcome a change of seasons and the change of activities that goes with it.

Really, it hasn't been as bad as we make it out to be. We're spoiled, and it simply wasn't up to our usual standards. It was still better than where I moved from. :stir:

I'm now at 49 days, likely won't catch admin this season if he skis Alta's remaining weekend days. Any chance Alta won't run that extra weekend due to lack of interest among the jaded locals?

Yes, but this year you can play his "quality not quantity" card -- you've had a better and more varied season.

Not that we're in competition with one another. No, of course not. :-"

Nope. That's never a reason because that lack of interest on the last weekend doesn't exist.
OTOH our meager snowpack is going fast, so, I hate to say, that might be a factor. I doubt it will cause them to close early, but I can see the terrain choices being more limited than a normal year.

Snowbird was a ghost town on Sunday. I pulled into the Zoom lot at 10:00 and parked in the very front row behind the loading and unloading row.

Now this is an interesting development:

Tonight
Snow likely after midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 19. Breezy, with a south southwest wind 20 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 41 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of less than one inch possible.

Wednesday
Snow. High near 27. South wind 15 to 17 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New snow accumulation of 7 to 11 inches possible.

Wednesday Night
Snow showers likely. Cloudy, with a low around 19. West wind 8 to 13 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 2 to 4 inches possible.

Thursday
Snow showers likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 33. West southwest wind 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New snow accumulation of 1 to 2 inches possible.

I always have a more varied season. And yes in retirement I'm putting more emphasis on quality.

I know from the one year admin was posting stats that it's very rare that I would ski more powder than he does. 2011-12 was probably the exception as Canada and the Northwest (where I skied 29 days) had a great year while Utah was subpar. I was also unusually lucky with powder on my trips that season.

In terms of powder I've had extremely little in lift service in 2014-15. Would my 5 days of cat and heli (which were also less powder than usual) yield more than a entire record low season in Utah? I would guess not, and as noted by MarcC, the powder season in Utah is not over yet.

I'm hoping (and planning) to enjoy around 16" of new on Thursday morning.

In any case, Evan (OpenSnow) says tomorrow is going to be better than the new snow last week. Hopefully admin will get some of that whether or not he gets around to posting anything about it. :stir:
