Day 58: Full-on spring.
There's almost certainly more winter to come, but with temperatures in the Salt Lake Valley pushing 70 today and mid-mountain temperatures at Alta reaching 42 (and feeling like 75 in the sun), spring has definitely sprung. Really, it was rather silly for us to show up for the 9:15 opening this morning as things really didn't even begin to start softening until around 11, but that's OK because Bobby Danger, AmyZ, Telejon, Marc_C and I practically had the place to ourselves.
Numb and tingling feet from vibrating across rock-hard corduroy, however, made the decision to head for an early latte at Baldy Brews and easy one to reach.
Kingslug and three of his traveling companions -- Gloria, Mia and Alan -- and TheOtherAmy joined us just before 11 and as Bobby, AmyZ and Telejon went across the border into Mineral Basin for a few runs, we headed over to the groomers on Supreme. Passing clouds throughout the day delayed the softening process, and kept many aspects from becoming too wet and soft as the afternoon wore on.
By 11:45, however, I surmised that Yellow Trail and Backside were likely ready, and sure enough, a few hours in the microwave had softened that terrain to perfection. Glatch was in fact a blast, with small bumps spaced perfectly and in just the right rhythm through the bumps. It was so good that we had to do it one more time before lunch outside on the sundeck at Alf's.
Somewhere along the way we became separated from Alan, but the trio who went to Snowbird had returned and we were ready for more. They wanted to make another trip out Backside, but by now that had spent a few too many minutes in the oven so we thereafter headed for the Spiny Chutes, which were perfect.
We literally closed Supreme, so it was time to head for West Rustler in the afternoon sun. Sure enough, Annie's was perfect but the lower part of Christmas Tree was starting to get a bit manky, so we finished up with a Last Run Protocol on High Boy at 4:30, which sported big bumps but perfect snow.
I think that the visitors had fun, and the goggle tan is really starting to fill in! As I drove home the links at Old Mill Country Club were filled with golfers, and the cyclists are out in full force.
