Day 40: Surprisingly good

I was surprised to wake up this morning and see snow falling at the house, for I didn't expect things to get underway until afternoon. I awoke Skiace and Molly sleeping in the guest room downstairs, and we headed up the canyon.

It snowed at varying intensities all day, accumulating perhaps 6" or so, about what was forecast (Icelantic, that's crystalline precipitation). Not enough to cover the crust on what had been sunnier aspects earlier in the week, but enough to make it feel darned good, and there was no crust at all underneath the new snow on northeastern through northwestern aspects.

We had a huge group today, starting with 11 by my count including Bob Dangerous, Marc_C, Pat, Skiace and Molly (who drove out together from San Diego), Tirolerpeter, Jonathan (who was here in January from Vermont), a UVM friend of Jonathan's (who's now headed for Hailey, ID for a week of hut-to-hut), Jonathan's folks (also from Vermont) and yours truly. Bob eventually went to Snowbird to meet up with a couple of other visitors before returning at the end of the day. Noticeably absent were one whipped Skidog, Amy and Tele Jon.

Highlights of the day included Eagle's Nest, North Rustler, Max's (x2), a perimeter tour of Catherine's and one little stash that shall remain unnamed. Thanks a zillion to the guy who picked us up on the Bypass Road, piling 10 of us into his pickup with gear! The second Max's pickup was like a Vermonter family reunion, and we swapped small world stories as we figured out who we all knew in common. One Utahn FTO Liftlines lurker introduced himself as well (how do I get you to de-lurk?). We took one last run before finishing up with suds upstairs at GMD at beer:30 (thanks for the beers, guys!).

I took no stills as the weather wasn't cooperative with snow falling all day, and shot only 2 short video clips that I'll use in some later production.

Tomorrow will be another big day with the morning spent at Solitude and the afternoon at Snowbird with Tony Crocker and his crew. If the avi danger is reasonable I'll park at Snowbird and tour over to Solitude and back (~3 miles), otherwise I'll just drive between the two (~30 miles - ugh!). Bob Dangerous and the Vermonters are headed to Snowbasin and I'm not sure about the others.

Once again Admin: Thanks for the tour.

Each time I go out with the crew I get to see another part of either Alta or Snowbird that I didn't know existed. It always amazes me how we get to ski nearly untracked powder shots when the rest of the mountain has been over-run by the powder hounds. :D

Today was relatively easy to put together as there really were no local powder hounds to speak of. Five or six inches isn't enough to drag them out of bed, and most of the places we went today are a challenge for the typical visitor to figure out how to get to. Even right after lunch the Wildcat lot was less than full.

I have to go out with you guys next time I'm out there! Do you need touring gear though?

Oh, hell no! We never left the ski area boundary, except for one minor foray into a certain unnamed adjoining ski area.

well, we didn't get 6 inches of rain-almost but, not quite. it did rain at one intensity all afternoon/evening-hard and hot with fog to follow. the fog was like pac man and miss pac man gettin it on at whatever snow they came upon. it's a perfect week to deter many to give up on right coast skiing for the duration so that the lifers can once again enjoy some peace and quiet for a few months more+ aprils coming which is my most favorite month to ski pow out here, you then can even have jay mostly to yourself mid-week.

it's late and i'm babbling and you guys could care less anyway
have fun

Not true at all. Many of us are former right-coasters and have many, many skiing friends back there. If we didn't care we would read the eastern forums.

You're just too much fun to poke with a stick!

oh, and i don't like givin a good pokin? poke away my friend. in the mean time, i'm gonna go poke around se nh and see what kind of variability we got in what snow we got left. i could probably ski right uphill in this nuking windfest we got goin right now. never too windy though for 1st rope at powderhouse hill.

Man...I really have to try and get back out there, just don't know if I can swing another trip. Tahoe chewed up the budget...and wasn't worth it at all. Really took a beating on that one

If you can't get there in one flight its not worth it. I take all the risk out of every trip by almost always going to utah. The snow is always good at one of the resorts, and best of all it doesn't break your budget. I'm going out again in late march, and I've been out already once this year. If I had gone to vail, whistler (well maybe not whistler, my uncle owns a condo there), or tahoe, it would have been one trip and thats it. By going to Utah 10 to 15 days a season I'm almost guaranteeing myself a powder day or two.

Sorry, I grew up in manhattan county... although I would have preferred Rockland county. I hope you like living in Utah. I wouldn't mind living there!

Same philosophy here regarding Utah - it is so easy to get to, that and our friends live there so our gear resides there as well.

Leaving Friday for another visit to the Park City area - hopefully we will get some powder.
