Day 53: Day-old baked goods.

Sunny, warm, deep blue skies, no wind and good snow. It all conspired to bring everyone out of the woodwork. From the traffic this morning you'd swear that it was a powder day. I gave Jesus, a cook at the Forklift at Snowbird, a ride up canyon this morning because Snowbird wasn't allowing any employees to park at the resort.

In reality, the crap show element wasn't all that bad today, save for the opening liftline, and despite warm temperatures snow quality stayed good all day thanks to overnight lows in the teens. What we got for all our trouble today:
  • Fresh untracked powder from Friday's storm when we caught the Baldy Shoulder rope drop.
  • More fresh untracked powder when we caught the Devil's Castle rope drop.
  • My first trip of the season up Mount Baldy today when they opened Main Chute.
  • A good start on a deep goggle tan.
  • One heluva smile at the end of the day.

Here's a Google Photo Sphere from atop Baldy:

And I've also got a bunch more conventional photos from the day:

I'm sorry, but that can't be Tony. I heard he was going to be at powmow today. Be careful, that must be an imposter. =;

Wow, is Main that bumpy from just that day? Daaaammmnnnn.....

Yep, which is why I resisted peer pressure to repeat the experience on Sunday.

300+ people at least hiked for that run . with no other way to descend the crowd didn't waist any time turning that snow into base. sunday was a different story . the shoulder opened and livin the dream wasn't officially open but looked nice from what i saw.

Supposedly Living the Dream was NOT open Sunday so Snowbird patrol closed "Snowbird access" in response to people skiing it. "Snowbird access" in in quotes because it's really the same hike from Baldy/Sugarloaf as from Alta. Evidently it's been a very long time since it's been permissable to hike to the top of Baldy past the top of the High Baldy traverse at Snowbird, as Adam & company found out Sunday.

Pics from the ballroom rope drop. Liz was about 10th in line, hit Ballroom proper, but no way could I pull out the camera for pics of her pristine turns while I was in the feeding frenzy traverse.

May I suggest preparing your photos before posting? You added your post 15 minutes ago but you've still uploaded no photos, just those silly placeholders of yours.

Tonight was a perfect example of why I post pics the way I do. I don't feel like having to rewrite a report because my computer, my browser, the Iron Blosam's WiFi, admin's server or God knows what else makes the picture uploading hang up. With the hangup I can lose the entire report and have to start over. This was one of those cases. I came back 20 minutes later, used a different browser, and for some unknown reason it worked just fine this time.

Those cliffs above AmyZ's left shoulder look accessible and droppable. What's the story, do they have a name, or are they too small? Tough to get to?

Ah, that makes more sense. That's Liz in Devils Castle, not Amy on the Shoulder. Yes, those are largely droppable. The ones behind Amy are not.
