The previous night's storm came in at the low end of the prediction at 5 inches. At these temps (the top of Collins never got over 4F all day) the new snow was pixie dust so it was worth considering what the subsurface would be like in deciding where to ski. Although it was clear at opening bell, it quickly clouded over and the day's weather was mostly a replay of Saturday though not snowing quite so much. I put heat packs in my gloves before stepping out of GMD (thanks Amy!) but still had to ball my hands inside periodically. As on Saturday I also had to add a third layer under my jacket at lunch.
Adam, Tseeb and I ran into rdwore in GMD, and after one Wildcat lap were joined by Vermont visitors Barry and Elise. Collins had cleared out so we ran two laps out the High T to Greely Hill. On the first run with bad vis Tseeb had an experience I've had trying to chase admin, getting too low and missing the line out to Piss Pass.
When we got up Collins we noticed Backside had opened, so took our next 2 runs there. By this time it was noon and time for lunch and for some of us to thaw out.
After lunch we headed for now open Supreme. On a low angle powder day no surprise rdwore led us out to Catherine's and Patsy Marley. On the last pitch of Patsy Marley in bad vis I managed to plow into a 4-foot snowbank, clicking out of the left ski and burying the the right ski thigh deep. It took 10+ minutes for to get the left ski on properly to lift the other one out. It was now 2:30, and with this conclusion to 4 energetic days of skiing you could stick a fork in my legs.
The group had waited for me but were headed out Catherine's again, so I bailed and joined one of the Epic groups that arrived at Supreme the same time. I took 2 laps into Supreme Bowl with them, cutting right from the bowl to some low angle trees. Adam then joined a few of us heading up Sugarloaf for the last run back to GMD. We hoped Ballroom would finally be open, but no such luck. It was still a good day with 15,300 vertical and about 6K of powder.
Epic met upstairs in GMD and voted to hold next year's Gathering in Jackson. Adam and tseeb drove up there today to ski the next 6 days. I had the camera but with my glove situation never considered using it. Rdwore took some pics in the North Greely area. No more midwinter trips for me without my mittens along just in case.
