Alta, UT (yes, skiing!) 10/5/2013

Day 1: Is on the books.

Bobby went up to Alta yesterday and reported 16" of new snow. It setted only 2 inches overnight, so Tele Jon, AmyZ, my new neighbor Tim and I decided to join him today in a 2,000 vertical-foot skin up to the top of Collins.

Honestly, we were about 2 hours too late -- it was turning to glop and melting fast. But if felt good to be out on the mountain, it felt good to be sliding with gravity with skis on our feet. In short, it felt good to be home again.

We figured the way your last pre-season, ultra low-tide outing turned out, Dawn would never let you out of the house.

I was going to ask about the illegal dog too, IIRC they are not allowed in LCC watershed. Photos are discreetly distant and shaded but the scofflaw bears a size and color relationship to Jake. [-X

Samantha had lots of unleashed hikes in various regulated places, so I'm not offering any criticism here.

They're allowed only if:
a) You're a LCC resident; and
b) You have one of the limited canyon dog owner permits.

Thus it was not an illegal dog.

I think that was a record fast response to any of my posts!

At any rate, when I skied Oct. 7 at Mammoth 2 years ago I was quite sure that I would never get any earlier than that. But I think this is the second time admin and company have been sooner in the year skiing new snow.

Last Saturday was different here. Santa Ana winds, 85 degrees at the beach, water at least 70, possibly my warmest beach day this season.

There would have been an even quicker response if you had called BS on Admin declaring that a proper ski day, which is what I was counting on.

Tony's becoming much less confrontational in his retirement.

Thats a ski day...hike up...ski down.. = ski day...

Tons and tons of backcountry skiers do exactly that and they count them as days.

I agree; I just like to watch Admin and Tony bicker like an old married couple and am disappointed when it doesn't happen.

What about the other dog, the small white one in the red vest? In the Watson Shelter photo.

Yes, recall Liz and I had 2 of them in Montana in June/July.

You probably wouldn't say that if you saw the e-mail correspondence about the Powder Magazine feature: DEEP, the Future of Snow.

IIRC, there are something like 50 resident dog permits for LCC. It's a lottery system.

seems some of the readers may be quick to draw conclusions when they think someone doesn't know the law . the tourist aren't here this time of year so most likely the only people your going to see are real locals - trust me the woman with the dogs knows the law better than most . i would have to agree with admin fully ,completely legal ..
