-12 deg F at 9:00 am ......COLD.........

I was hoping Supreme would be open first thing.....no such luck....opened at around 11ish. Lapped Supreme for 3.5 hrs.....very light dry knee deep pow.....hit the Erosion gullies....bad decision.......very thin on the ridges....bring your rock skiis......hit up Catherine's....not bad.. the longer the traverse, the better the goods....

Wanted to hit up East Greeley to Albion as a last run but....just wimped out.......felt like it was getting colder out : )

Today's mission was as follows: get the goods, but don't get frostbite....

Not too many people on the hill today....

All in all, a solid ski day.

I'm charging my electrically heated jacket for tomorrow!

the toes were challenge today for me.......i need the $250 heated boots

also......are there heated goggles? any perspiration inside goggles causes major crystallization...even w/ anti fogging solution sprayed inside......

everything can be solved with a little makers mark, actually........... little pricey but...hmmm... http://www.coldpole.com/home.htm

I encountered this problem the first day at Mustang Snowcat 2 years ago at -6F. With each run it built up more and eventually with impaired visibility I missed a subtle rollover, yard-saled and took half an hour to find a buried ski. They had to take the googles into the well-heated cat driver's cabin to get rid of the buildup. After that (and the next day was -22F) I made sure to wipe down the inside of the goggles thoroughly after every run to remove any moisture that could crystallize. Just one more thing to concern us when we want to ski in those temperatures.

What, no comment on those WROD photos? Kingslug had better be hoping for more snow. Why travel for that?

Snocountry didn't change that acreage number when Supreme opened (yesterday Dec. 6 was its first day?), so I'm guessing something like 60% open now. Hopefully more after this weekend's storm.

You really don't freaking get it, do you? How do my face shots today calculate into your statistics? Do they get a 1.3 weighting, with moon phase, distance from the next total solar eclipse and the standard deviation of the population of FLDS members in Utah get factored in too?

That photo was taken after 2pm, so you're right... not enough acreage open right now for the hordes of people. Of course all of them are local - no one would be stupid enough to travel for Tony's definition of substandard snow.

HERO skiing up at point supreme today - no one there and much deeper than down front at collins lift . and it dumped snow all afternoon . that acreage in cathrines area could have been some of the finest quality skiing in the country today !!!!!

I have often noted Alta's attractiveness in early season. Has there ever been this much of a disparity on what's open at Alta vs. Snowbird? Actually, since you're there, what's NOT open at Alta? Is the High T still too sketchy? And yes, I bump those letter grades for unusually good snow conditions at partially open areas.

snowbird opened the upper rats nest gate into great scott & upper cirque - silver fox but not much else , boarders are hammmering the place. i swear on my farthers grave on one trip out through the trees behind watsons i saw people on the high-t , skied to the bottom - up the chair and out the lower high traverse- but could only get around the hill to race hill and everyone was being forced down the hill from there , there was activity on the higher -t . what i think alta did was allow some folks out the high -t to actually set one on the hillside to allow snow to build where their tracks were , but not so many people out there that it would degrade the snow pack that was there . it was open earlier in the week some of the daily pics were taken from around piss pass .

I still love how every rock, stump and minor bump has a name over in Oootah... Reminds me of Crested Butte where they do the same. At least you can't get very lost that way, lol.

It's incredibly useful for the ski patrol to reference locations. It's also incredibly useful for locals to be able to discuss the next run with names that aren't on the map while visitors are within earshot, like on a chairlift.

I've had cold toe problems on warmer days than that. Last year I added some mylar liners to the outside of the boot liners (inside the shells), following the instructions on this page:
http://folk.uio.no/joakimt/skiboot/
Probably not as warm as heated boots, but it did help noticeably. If you decide to give mylar liners a try, be careful to allow enough room to not restrict boot tongue movement when entering/exiting boots.
