And the first ski area to open for 11-12 will be.......

Wolf Creek, Colorado. They got 3 feet of snow and plan to open on Saturday. Terrain undetermined, but prob around 600 acres worth.

That is pretty sweet for sure.

Just for the record though, Mt Hood has been open for weeks. They never really close...

While true, I'm fairly certain that skiing on fresh snow instead of a glacier is both much preferable and also the harbinger of the new ski season for everyone... Thus much more notable than Hood IMO.

I think Hood had some powder days a couple of weeks ago actually. I saw a snow alert for the PNW.

Regardless, Wolf Creek is a good start. I just think it's funny that there is this race to be the first open when Hood has won that battle year after year. Most of the time the riding isn't any better at say Loveland than Hood. The hype just cracks me up.

Cheers to Wolf Creek though. I've already seen some sore loser comments from Loveland Employees.

I agree that Mt. Hood is likely as good as the WROD at Loveland or A-Basin. But I'm sure Wolf Creek is better. Nobody on FTO has gone there to check it out yet though? It can't be any farther for the above two posters as what Staley and I did last week.

I assume you're referring to hitting Wolf right now? My schedule just isn't that flexible. Crazy work, work getting done on my house, toddler around.... Maybe in a few more years if it should happen again.

Actually, if we want to be technical about it Wolf Creek lost out to Las Vegas:

Seems Vegas "pulled a Keystone". Reminds me of when Keystone would open in the darkness using their night lighting in a desperation attempt to claim first place over Loveland. Vegas must be desperate to pull in enough skiers to help fund their big expansion plans down there.

I did not make the trek down to Wolf Creek. Thought about it, but as most of you know I don't really care to ride lifts all that much anymore. I also was lazy about hiking for any turns too. A bunch of the Neversummer crew did head down there though and they put up a pretty sweet video.

You were missing the "www." part. If you roll your mouse over the BBcode button for Vimeo you'll get a hint.

Is Wolf Creek as flat as it looks in that video (nicely done btw)?

The stuff that they opened up is. Maybe ~400 verts of pitch max at the top with a lot of long mostly flats the rest of the way down. Their better stuff is hiking to Alberta Peak or on the Alberta lift (not yet open), though even those areas have long PITA flat run-outs once you are done with the decent pitch.

Any of you guys ever snowboard up in Wisconsin or is that just too lame for everyone here. This is where I'm from and we haven't got any snow yet for some reason. Does anyone know any places withing a half days drive from Wisconsin I could hit up to ride? All this talk here about all this snow everywhere is making my depressed a little
