Anyone know a good ski shop in Sandy?

Hi

The wife and I are making a trip out from England in February. We arrive 14 Feb and have 5 days staying in Sandy and skiing Alta/Snowbird - we're then driving to Jackson Hole for 5 days there and then have 3 days left that we'll make a call on nearer the time depending on conditions etc.

We are planning to buy new skis on this trip and wondered if anyone knows a good shop in Sandy where we can demo some with the option of buying?

Also any advice on what skis to buy gratefully accepted. We are both a similar level - can ski anything groomed and are ok on powder when it's not too steep or deep. We're planning to take some more lessons this year to improve our powder ability (or at least attempt to....) and we both want one pair of skis that will cover most of the mountain.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Mike

Nothing particularly good in Sandy. Your best options would be The Lift House on Fort Union Blvd. just west of the mouth of Big Cottonwood Canyon [ http://www.thelifthouse.com/ ]or the Wasatch Powder House at 3158 E 6200 S (owned by the same people who own the Deep Powder House at Alta Lodge [ http://powderhouseskishop.com/ ], which is another option as is the Alta Ski Shop at Wildcat Base at Alta).

Powder House also owns the Motherlode ski shop at Goldminers Daughter. A huge advantage is that you can swap demos out at will while you're skiing.

Christy Sports is a chain but in addition to their store in the Valley at Mt. Olympus they also own the primary ski shop at the Snowbird Tram, so the same principle applies.

I know that Christy's at Snowbird does, but that's because their boot operation is separately owned by a former PhD podiatrist. As such he's pretty opinionated, but absolutely guarantees a perfect fit. For example, he advocates that when you buy boots, the very first thing you should do is toss the stock liners and replace them with Intuition liners (for an additional $300). Because of all this effort and knowledge and mad ninja boot fitting skills, he charges full retail for boots. So if you're willing to spend a kilobuck on boots....

Or Zip Fits, which cost even more. That's what he's doing for AmyZ's boots.

Richard has used Surefoot and has been very happy with them. I realize they have mixed reviews, but gpaulski is likely a rather similar skier to Richard, and more importantly Surefoot has stores in multiple ski resorts, so someone in gpaulski's situation can have the boots worked on if necessary at a different resort in future seasons.

In Utah Surefoot is only at the Park City resorts. I'm a bit surprised they are not in any Wyoming or Montana resorts.

Thanks all.

I think we'll try PowderHouse - as you say we can swap while we're skiing then.

Any recommendations for skiing last 3 days of our trip - we need to end up at SLC airport and will be driving down from Jackson.

Thanks

You can ski Deer Valley and demo Rossignol's current lineup for free throughout the day. Just visit the yurt by the Empire Pass base area. That will more than make up for the obscene amount DV charges for its passes.

Wow, Marc_C once again identified the weak point in my argument. I await his list of free on-piste ski demo locations that offer multiple brands and bottomless espressos.

Alta in early December.
Regarding weak points in your arguments - post more carefully!
