the lay-off of 10 days created a jones of epic proportions, so dealing with loon and it's marginal conditions propbably would have sufficed, but had 2 comp tickets to attitash so took the chance that the nh vaca week would not be as bad in bartlett and gave it a shot keepign in mind that i would probably never pay to ski attitash and it's no character asc trail cuts!!!... made the right choice for crowd avoidance... no real lines at all and found out later loon was jammed w/ kid racers... attitash's morning report stated that they had 3 major bump lines open, 1 at bear peak and two at attitash... they lied of course!!!! i am trying to cut em slack cause i figured the weather patterns of the previous two weeks mandated smashing!!! however their one bump line was not as bad as one might think...it was on bear peak ( i don't know the trail names at atti that well, i think it was kachina or half of it anyways... the rest was all smashed flat frozen gran and hardpacked..., but again i was expecting the worst after mass vaca and no real snow after rain so it was all right!!! but it was cold, man was it cold close to zero at base and wind of about 25 in spots...about 95% open ... attitash is the white bread of the ski world... it's awww -right i spose... but kinda borin... meticulous grommin and all that jazz!!!! i'll go back , maybe, if i score a few freebies again next year... sorry les!!!! atti ain't gettin it done
the cat on friday:
feared the worst and was mightily intrigued to find out just what the heck went on there since i closed out there 2 weeks ago after the big dump and subsequent rain.. i knew that had no substantial snowfall since so i was curious to see what they did with all that glazed over fresh...well in a word they smashed it, which really comes as no surprise... what is a surprise is what they smashed...everything!!!!, except the old red double line ( catenary i think ) yes boy's they actually dragged the line under the quad and under the old gondy... i never would have guessed they could get a drag cat up those lines but they did it... i guess they had to though, if they were draggin those lines it must have been pretty bad, i just never have seen that before... let me know if anyone out there has!!!... actually the old red double line, which they left alone, was not as bad as i woud have thought, like atti, the day before, there was room to play on the backside of bump if you were up and over the skis... of course, me still being far from ready for prime time, spent about half the turns flailing... enough legit bumpers dropped in and skied it well enough though so i can't say they were bad!!! again another fridgid day with a base of about 0 and wind of about 20... they are about 98% open...i didn't have the stones to try and drop off piste but i have to suspect the o.b woods are unskiable... the patrolled glades were closed...northern exposed faces had some wicked slabs of hard hard pack, but most areas were edgeable with the proper turns...bad news: they really need so snow to, as the jay peak snow line says, " refresh all surfaces " ... good news: if all stays reasonably constant and nothing trajic occours in the next 4 weeks, the cat should be set up for an epic april of corn bumps like three years ago!!!!
p.s, on the way to the cat, buddy gil and i made a pit stop at bretton woods cause it appeared that that apparent snow belt on 302 had pick up 3 inches or so overnight,,, so for purely entertainment value, we thought we would just inquire... spotted the head ski patroler coming out of the shack ( it was about 7:15am )... asked him about the bump runs and got " this is bretton woods, we don't have bump runs, it's not what our clientel want "... bid the nice man a good day and a good bye ( forever ), while trying to fully comprehend what i had just heard...that place could be one heck of a intermediate/beginer bump mecca with it's gradual pitches and decent snow fall and such... ah never mind... no one skis bumps anyways...apparently
