Today dawned clear again under an almost warm sun, and you could feel the holiday momentum building as there were tons of events and lots of new terrain open. This morning they opened Outback and Red Chair so we have 8 out of 10 chairs in operation, all on natural snow. That three inches we got last week sure helped, at least psychologically.
My son Spenny, who's been on the road filming in Colorado, is back for the Holidays. We both are entered in the Dirksen Derby which is a super fun and challenging banked slalom (for snowboarders only). It 's a fundraiser for Tyler Ecklund, a young rider who suffered a horrific fall and is a quadriplegic. Finals on Sunday.
Pine Martin Lodge and Scapolo's Restaurant now open. Seen through the top of Outback which just opened today.
Near the top of Outback. Surprisingly good coverage and as it was Day 1 for the lift, there was powder as well. Over towards NWX was the best. No pow photos as I was too busy lapping and enjoying the holiday buzz.
The view up Kangaroo. I really had my freshie blinders on this morning as I was intent on getting in some practice runs on the Derby course. But this time of year is hectic so I was a little late. But the old scout that I am I got some.
This race was styled after the "Banked Slalom" at Mt Baker, WA that is legendary in the snowboard circles. I was shocked how many dudes showed up to race today, they had an elimination taking the top 25%. I didn't have to qualify since I'm in the Older and Wiser category. I think they're glad we're still around to participate.
Even though it's set on an intermediate slope the race course is very challenging with banked hairpin turns, some stutter jumps and abrupt transitions. Pretty trick, wish me luck!
Check out that parking lot.
