Had the late morning/afternoon off and didn't have the time to do Summit or Mt High East, so figured I'd head to Baldy for a few mellow turns. Forgot the camera so no pics, but this was essentially a trip up to lap Bonanza and Skyline and check on how the base is holding up. Who knows, maybe it'll snow sometime in 2010 and we'll want to know what the subsurface is....
Base is holding up well, thanks to the cold temps and mild Santa Anas. I expected there to be significant melting from the last time I was up around Christmas, and coverage everywhere off groomed runs was only minimally less than previous. Looked into South Bowl, which appears well covered. We just need some snow to fall and things will still be looking good....
They've been making some snow on the main runs and these were better covered than last time, though random rocks still littered Skyline. The beginner run was corning up a little around noon but firmed back up around 2pm. Tried a run down Goldridge which was a terrible mistake- it was rigid hardpack interspersed with slick shiny bulletproof ice. Should be closed IMO, but the way in is through a thin gate marked experts only, so fair enough warning I guess. Still...
A fun day all things considered.
