Baldy 12/24

One word: Bulletproof.

The rain they got the other day messed the hill up pretty bad. Today I had expected it to start snowing around noon and eventually having a decent surface (especially since I had brought my wife up with me for some mellow Christmas Eve turns), but alas, it was ice capades out there. The best line to be had was for a beer at the Notch.

I figured for the next few days that this next storm would bury everything in snow and all would be well, but with the new changes in the forecast, that may not be the case, and things may stay this way for a spell.

It's slick out there, folks. Pray for snow. Merry Christmas to all.

Today's report said raining early this morning. The rain ended here in Glendale before noon, though it's still cloudy. Baldy claimed the Monday storm ended with 3 inches of snow, which I suspect from past experience may be true at the top of Thunder, but probably not for most of the terrain. That's probably the best we can hope for this time too.

If Thunder gets early snow, it usually preserves very well through January as it's steep and mostly north-facing. But this is a detriment if it rains. It will stay icy until mid-February unless there is a new snowstorm to resurface it.

Mountain High and Snow Valley are closed for wind. Mt. High reports "wet packed" again and Snow Summit "mixed precipitation." This may be a weekend best spent on Big Bear groomers with snowmaking to resurface.

This is an example of why I understand some of the mentality of the easterners. Now I know why I seized the moment for the Baldy powder Dec. 18, even though it was inconvenient with my leaving for Mammoth the next day. In SoCal as in the Northeast, those who waited until after Christmas missed out.

And note that the Utards don't have these problems  .

Whatever 3-4 inches they might have gotten after the rain had been stripped by wind- there was no sign of it anywhere on the hill. They had made a little snow on Bonanza and the beginner run, and that was were the best conditions were. And by "best" I mean "least conducive to a slide for life."

I had previously been planning on a jaunt to Waterman tomorrow. Their online snow report claims 4-6" new today and still falling. I'm extremely dubious, though slightly intrigued. Maybe the laws of physics have ceased to apply in that corner of the San Gabriels. I'll play it by ear in the morning.
