I got some sleep on call last night so figured I'd spend an uncrowded weekday on the prowl for some corn.
Turned out to be a little disappointing.
Got there around 10:30 and was on top of Thunder a little past eleven- figured things would have softened reasonably by then, but there was a cool breeze blowing and anything shaded was still sketchy. Sun exposed areas were only just starting to soften.
Took a run down Bonanza (still fast), tried Robin's trees (still hard), then figured "screw it, I'll go check out South Bowl and maybe by the time I hike out, things out here will be softer."
South Bowl was only OK, needed a couple more hours. Hiked (pretty much all the way) out, tried Goldridge trees, which were more shaded and not very pleasant.
So it was time for a couple beers and some chili cheese fries.
After lunch things had softened quickly and considerably- so much so that the beginner run had gone from rideable to spring sticky glop in 45 minutes.
Checked out the Tube, where there was now reasonable fun snow to be found. The runout from the bottom of the Tube is still well covered, so I did that a couple times. Checked out South Bowl again which was now much better, but not quite good enough to justify the hike out. So I checked out Robin's trees again (better), and decided I'd had about enough. I hiked over to Bentley's knowing it would be an interesting ride down. Best corn of the day to be had up top here, and I thought I could find a nonstop line down, but I did have to unstrap for a 15 foot section of rock.
All in all a fun day, but not the cornfest I was hoping for. Probably my last Baldy day of the season. Thunder may have enough snow to make it to the 12th, we'll see what they do after this weekend.
