Baldy April 16th

Snow report says packed powder -- its not. It's all spring skiing up there. Still pretty good coverage on Thunder. Starting to really slow down in some spots. Weather is great. Probably 50 people up there on Friday. Chair #4 closed. Pretty empty by 3pm. Thunder finally softened up by about 1 PM.

The folks at Mt. Baldy have to be the biggest liars when it comes to snow reports.

Last week they listed "all lifts" and "most runs" open. With Chair 4 closed that is not all lifts. I'll buy the "most runs". Why can't they set up a proper snow report page and just give the proper information? One that states the actual status of every lift and run. Oh I forgot, they can't do that since they hire junior high students to create their web site.

I won't. If you can't ski on chair 1 or 4 it's no more than half when you consider that a few lines on Thunder also get direct sun and lose cover. Nonetheless half of Baldy is still more interesting skiing than the other SoCal locals.

I think the BS ski reports are counterproductive. It's not rocket science. Put up a list of the runs like Big Bear and Mt. High do, explicitly saying which are open/closed. There have been many positive changes at Baldy this season, and people showing up to substantially worse conditions than advertised could undo a lot of the improvement in Baldy's reputation.
