Baldy TR, Sunday, Feb 20th

Just got back from the poo show. And a poo show it was \:D/

Left Claremont at 6:35 AM. Got past the second tunnel and it was super sketchy (I drive a 2WD Tacoma truck). Snow level was well below the village. I put the chains on headed back up the hill. Last 200 feet up to the parking lot are always entertaining :?

Got to the ticket booth around 7:25 or so.....3 min wait for tickets.....booya! Getting up the hill was quite challenging.....

Got to Thunder around 7:45 AM. My buddies told me they were first chair and had done 2 runs.

I headed over to Goldridge Trees and did 3 laps. Some REALLY sick lines. However, I was cautious because, as I predicted, it was 1- 2 feet of snow on top of the bulletproof Baldy base. And I like to keep my skiis in decent shape.....Therefore, although the snow was quite light and really nice, one had to exercise caution and have a decent knowledge of where the deeper spots were on the mountain.

Then decided to take a few laps in South Bowl. Lightly-moderately tracked, the top half of South Bowl was quite sublime--lots of untracked lines.....I'll be dreaming of it all day and night long! The traverse out was no problem. I did 3-4 laps thru South Bowl.

Then decided to try Thunder proper (did 4 runs in various places) -- some of the lines were a little sketch (like I said, bulletproof underneath). All in all, if you knew where to go it was really good!

By then it was 10:45 and the line on Thunder SUCKED -- 15 - 25 min wait. I wanted nothing to do with that (for a 4 minute ski down)

Got to the parking lot around 11:15. Ride down was surprisingly easy, however, there was a bus stuck on one of the switchbacks I thought was pretty special (see photos).

It might still be decent tomorrow if the cloud cover hits it (the clouds were coming in when I was leaving), but definitely all tracked up by now.

Talked to Nick about opening up chairlift #4 and he said: not a chance. Basically not enough snow. It looked good.....but was deceiving. He said it was dirt then snow then dirt and snow and skiing it was ....dangerous.

I rode the lift down and saw 3 guys coming down: I asked how it skiied and they said: treacherous. Remember, last appreciable snowfall was 6 weeks ago.

Anyways, time for a nap. See ya on the hill.....

nice job... too bad it mostly rained up to almost 8k all day and night Friday, otherwise it would have put down a nice little base for this light stuff we had last night.

nice lift line! :-s

That was my guess. Snow visible way down the front side of the San Gabriels on the middle day of President's Weekend = 3-ring circus on the roads with snowplayers. Add to that chair 1 not skiable and chair 4 questionable at best and I decided to take a pass.

Kudos to jojo_obrien for getting the absolute maximum out of this situation with the minimum of aggravation. =D>

Reported snowfall from this storm was equal among the SoCal locals vs. the usual pattern of Baldy/Waterman = 2x Big Bear. Snowave's comment gives a clue why. I knew Wednesday was mostly rain but did not realize Friday had rain in the San Gabriels also. I think Big Bear had nearly all snow Friday.

Chair 4 opened right after you left. I stayed on 3, the lines went over there.

Rode Bentley's to the ticket window before unstrapping.

Nice photos!
