The forecast called for a few inches of snow overnight plus a few more during the day from a warm SW storm. We (myself and my girlfirend's brother) decided on BC instead of Vail, mostly because of the recent extended dry spell, and minimal wet new snow made the back bowls not-so appealing.
The day's weather alternated between heavy snow, thick fog, and an occasional eye-of-the-storm clearing, surrounded by dark gray clouds.
I fell down once, I think that was the direction, since at the time I couldn't tell which way was up--
We found a couple inches of wet new snow, which made even the best grooming kinda lumpy. We followed the snowcats down Harrier after lunch, the ride was fast but bouncy. Moguls on Grouse mtn were angry, tight, and stiff, but by afternoon there was enough new snow to make them fun.
The mountain was darn near deserted, most of the locals apparently staying away from the less-than epic conditions, and fair-weather tourists gone shopping (or at home shedding tears on their 401k statements). Chairs other than Centenniel were running 1/10 full, or less. BBQ lunch at Red tail camp was spendy but yummy, whiskey-braised beef brisket sandwich and a brew. We did happen across one of the dudes handing out warm chocolate-chip cookies at the end of the day, mmmm. A great day of skiing, in challenging snow and weather.
