as mapadu says, "tropical" weather today as predicted. winds howled.
almost enough to blow me over.
no new snow since i was there two weeks ago. only things new were
recent wind loading and redepositted snow from the high winds. 40-50
degrees. partly cloudy. we pretty much just explored a new line down
into Middle Basin. i was a bit worried about slides because of the high
temps so i took it easy. only took a few turns then stopped. i like to
bomb most of the time, but the conditions didn't call for that type of riding
today. i knew something was bound to go. low and behold i got a little
sluff to go, but nothing to big to accumulate to much. although, the snow
was so wet and heavy that it had potential to slip you on your butt and
take you for a ride. slope was about 35 degrees, prime for av's. early
season conditions existed and of course we hit a few rocks. then we
skinned back up to the ridge. dropped down into Beehive Basin to go
back to the car. (Jeep is back in action). as we skinned along the ridge,
getting blown in the face by the dirt. oh, ya. all the snow was blown off
previously so it was just transporting the dirt/dust over onto the lee side
of the ridge. winds were expected to be up to 60mph, but i don't know
what they were blowing at up there. it was nasty. so we dropped down
into the other side of the ridge (beehive) and proceeded to ride down with
caution. recently wind loaded and early season conditions. of course we
hit a couple more rocks at first. then lower down on that run it became
much better and about the same slope angle. windloaded, but could hold
an edge at least. a few powder stashes as well that were waiting for us.
turned out not to be as bad as we thought. then back to the jeep.
another day. forgot cam again.
isolated everything (slush, windloading, pow, ice crust, etc)
so future backcountry conditions in this area will be quite sketchy until it settles.
(SIDE NOTES) where's the snow at? JH is doing well. the storms just
keep missing us up here. just an hour south of big sky recieved about
two feet in the past week while big sky got 1" dustings. yes, inch. i think
i'll have better conditions in the east in about two weeks than what's
around here right now. big sky lifts were on wind hold again today as
well. also heard that av's where sliding across the road over the pass
down in Jackson last week. super dangerous avi conditions. warm
temps. word!
