The 16 inches Belleayre got on Monday and Tuesday made a big difference for us today. The hill was 100% open, even the natural snow trails. I've never been to any of the local ski areas on a mid-winter Saturday, and now I know why. Even Belleayre, traditionally the Burke Mountain of the Catskills, was filled to capacity today. As long as we stayed on the Tomahawk and #7 lifts, there were little to no liftlines, but Super Chief was a mob scene.

Had a great time with jasoncapecod and his daughter Zoe, who has no problem keeping up with Dad and his internet acquaintances. Around 1 pm, as Jason and I stopped for a break mid-run, she skis up to us and asks "why are you stopping?" Jason replied, "BECAUSE WE'RE OLD!"

James,
Zoe and I had a fantastic day. She was very impressed with your knowledge of the mountain. Hopefully we can hook up again.

james,

Thanks for the report. How do you think the Catskills are going to hold up through this warm spell based on coverage? I imagine most of the natural snow trails will probably get nuked?

We were going to head to Windham today with some free tickets we have from Warren Miller, but decided to call it off due to the warm weather and drizzle/fog.

I completely agree on the whole Saturday thing. God knows what Hunter would have been like yesterday. I've always been curious to see how the experience would be at Plattekill on a Saturday (I've only skied it during a powder daize).

It ain't looking good for the Catskills over the next 3-4 days. Lots of trails are going to poof with the warmth and rain.

That said, it takes very little snow to get everything going again, as evidenced by this week. Even the Tomahawk Liftline was skiing nicely. There was good coverage pretty much everywhere, and while we ran into hardscrabble on some of the upper trails, most of the day, conditions were great for high-speed cruising.

The pic I posted was representative of the interior natural snow trails... no one there to disrupt your zen. However, the popular trails were crowded at times.

You can see Plattekill from the far skier's left of Belleayre, and I'm sure it was a better bet for avoiding crowds.

I was glad Jason prodded me to head up there; it was a real nice day.

You should have gone! A little fog and drizzle is only an aesthetic problem. the snow skis quite well when the weather is like this. We had a great day out today. It didn't drizzle much and the fog was minimal. It was gray, but the snow skied like butter.

I hope to get out again on Tuesday. Don't let a little warm weather stop you. Go to Windham asap!! The skiing is quite good right now, or wait until the next round of winter if you much have powdery-like surfaces.

Sharon,

I actually don't mind warm weather and soft snow, but the sky cover and potential for rain and drizzle in the Cats was what held us back. If it had been partly cloudy, we would have been there in a second. Hopefully surfaces (and weather) will cooperate for going out next weekend since this week looks pretty shot.

You should have come out. Sun was in and out on Sunday. Hunter crowds were avoidable at the D, F and Z lifts. The clouds were above the skiing.

Oh well, I guess we blew it then :? . At least we got a whole ton of junk done at home, some of which has been put off since before our wedding (which was in October)! Rest of the season I think I can't afford to miss any opportunities at this point (hopefully my work will decide the same thing!). I feel like I am quickly on my way to not having much of a season if I don't get going!

well, enjoy the warm weather, and go out to GP for some "spring skiing" this week. Next weekend it will freeze again. Can you say "Boilerplate"?

Unless we get another dump before it freezes into an icy base, it will be sketchy and scratchy to say the least.

Get out and enjoy it while it's still soft, or sit home and wait for it to snow again.
