Big and Little Cottonwood Tour May 18th 2011 video & picture

Current Mountain Conditions*
All lifts and terrain are closed Monday 5/16 through Thursday 5/19. No uphill hiking or touring on mountain is allowed for safety reasons. Snowbird has received more than 30" of snow this week. Due to the unusual amount of spring snow and the forecast for continuing precipitation, hours of operation and available terrain for Friday, 5/20, are TBD. Depending on the overnight snowfall, if Snowbird is able to open for skiing and riding Friday the terrain will be limited. This report will be updated when new info is available. ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,) ](*,)

From a purely selfish standpoint I say  . There's no way on earth I can make it up there tomorrow, and that just means smoother (and if the sun stays off it, deeper) stuff for me on Saturday.

If you see skidog on Saturday be sure to wish him a happy birthday!

the friday before memorial weekend only in lcc could this happen !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  :ski: :ski: :ski: planning on a couple of hours in the morning myself .

I was up at Alta today and I will tell you even though there was easily 24 inches of new snow, that stuff was like NOTHING I've ever skied before in Utah, let alone my life. I know you will all think I'm crazy but after skiing Alta today I went over to DV where there was probably only 12 inches of new snow and it actually skied better. A lot better. There is so much of that heavy stuff over there that once anyone skies it, its going to be impossible to ski it chopped up. Impossible!

Right after I left temps spiked even up to 10,500. At the snow plot at Alta they were sitting above 40 for a few hours this afternoon. I hate to say it but I don't think you'll be missing much tomorrow, even if it opens.

Uhhh. No. Mammoth has had 22 inches since May 8, and the lifts have been spinning every day, as snowboard247 recently reminded us. viewtopic.php?f=3&t=9668

Yes, but it will take a week of clear weather before this can happen. Adam is grumbling because Mammoth faces the same problem. But sometime in June we're all going to get some impressive corn.

As of 8a Friday morning:

Road Conditions
The canyon road is currently closed due to avalanche control work. Straight-line travel is now permitted, there is still no access to parking lots. Estimated reopening time is 8:30am.

Current Mountain Conditions
Snowbird's avalanche control teams are evaluating the unusual spring snowpack to determine if we can open any terrain today, Friday, May 20. We will update this information as soon as possible.

Due to the unusual quantity and density of this week’s snowfall, Snowbird will not open for skiing and riding today, Friday, May 20. We are hoping to be open this weekend, depending on weather and snow conditions. Click here for more information…

By this evening it'll be ~48 inches in LCC just this week.

I'm a bit concerned about that word "hoping"... :-k

Hey Tony, where do you go to find the official snow totals at the Collins mid mountain plot? I'd be curious to see how close they are to 800"

Due to the unusual quantity and density of this week's snowfall, Snowbird will not open for skiing and riding today, Friday, May 20. No on mountain hiking or touring will be permitted at this time.

The tentative schedule is to open for skiing and riding at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The forecast is calling for warm afternoon temperatures so the mountain will likely close around noon. There will be limited terrain accessed by Peruvian Express, Mineral Basin and Little Cloud, conditions permitting. The skiing and riding is recommended for experts only.

Yikes on the 48" crud show... You guys need a touch more altitude...

Over this way the Basin has had 11" of slightly fluffier snow over the past two days... (temps have been dropping into the low 20's up there for overnight lows for example). Though it is true that it's been skiable daily on 'only' a 95" base depth on May 20th... :troll:

This is a warm, wet, slow moving storm. We could add 3000' to base and summit elevations and it still wouldn't have made a difference.

Just got back from DV. About 20 inches or so up there and it skied far better then Alta did yesterday. Sun came out for five min and lap 3 was not even close to as enjoyable as laps one and two.

Gotta call BS. If you add 3K feet you drop at least 8-10F in temperature and that's being conservative since the standard lapse rate is much more than what I quoted. So slop snow at 32F or perhaps higher temp that you actually got would have not even been all that wet and perhaps even actual 'greatest snow on earth'.

Very Early and very Late season Utah has a distinct disadvantage in altitude... :troll: Though I'd love for a slop storm or two early season over this way to cover the rocks better... So maybe the early slop is not entirely a disadvantage... :sabre fight:
