is there another resort in the big bear area (not Bear or summit) it looks like an abandoned resort of some sort? am i crazy, but i'm sure thats what it looked like when i was driving thru the city.

The defunct ski area was Snow Forest. I answered several questions regarding old SoCal areas in my Oct. 14 and Nov. 5 posts at http://www.firsttracksonline.com/boards ... c.php?t=77 .

I have also seen snowmaking on at the alpine slide as you drive into Big Bear from the west. There is a short chair there also. This is a different location from Snow Forest, which I believe was located south of the main part of town at the end of Pine Knot Ave.

Thanks Tony.. hey is it possible to still hike it w/out getting any harrassment. iwould like to check it out this weekend?

I wouldn't see why you couldn't hike Snow Forest. But natural snow areas will be crappy by this weekend with the 10+ days of warm weather and more of the same predicted.

I've always been intrigued by Snow Forest for some reason. I always wanted to try it when it was open (pre 1990ish), but I never got the chance. I remember that the Big Bear High School ski team practiced there and it was also home to the Inland Empire Ski Team. On powder days, I have definitely seen tracks from hikers, so yeah, it's very possible to hike it. I'm hoping to hike it someday myself. I rummaged through some old boxes the other day and I actually found the old trail map for Snow Forest. I used to collect trail maps as a kid and Snow Forest was always one of my favorites because of it's obscurity. I'd love to post it, but I dont have a scanner. But I do have an aerial shot of Snow Forest borrowed from terraserver-usa.com. When I find it, i'll post it. I also have a trail map of the old Ski Green Valley area near Running Springs. Never got to go there either, but I've heard it was pretty bad anyways.
