big sky 4.2.06

another POWDER day? 9" of new was claimed. more like 6" on the lower mtn and 12" off the tram. somewhere in between off challenger and in the bowl. partly cloudy in the morning, then mostly sunny in the afternoon. temps in the 30's increasing close to 40's in afternoon.

challenger held good snow all morning. BRT was tolerable until about noon. little tree was scraped off about the same time. even though it was heavier than normal and got tracked out fairly quick, the snow was skiing real well on the face until about lunch time. it was beat up pretty good after the tram closed though.

two tram laps. otter slide to yeti traverse was what is always expected; large bumps on very steep terrain with a few loose rocks. got better as you got down. gullies held up good. 3rd gully sluffed a bit, but still plenty of pow and room to point it. Tohelluride looked good around 2:30 with plenty of tracked powder still left over. Marx looked beat. the wave was waist deep at every turn. lots of lines down the lower A-Z's. a few figure 1's too.

moonlight looked like bridger bowl today there were so many people hiking. the bridgers only picked up 4-5" from this storm, so all the ridge hippies were probably at moon.

Hi Hamdog,

Did you ever make it down Little Couloir? Sorry, I missed a few Western Reports this year.

not yet. it took me about 5 yrs to find someone willing, have the equipement and get an opening to hit the Big. plus have tolerable snow conditions. only two weeks left in this season. the Little is a whole other level compared to the Big too. finding partners and the right conditions are significantly reduced, but maybe i'll get lucky....

a patroller was talking on the tram yesterday hoping to open the upper A-Z's and the Little for today, but who knows what happened. Little slid natural a couple days ago too, so it would have to be a late morning session for ideal corn conditions (considering that riding will be on the bed surface).

I really hope you're not talking about me for having to wait to hit big.

Actually, I could probably ski the Little fine, however the consequence of screwing up are pretty bad. :? I would need to see how the entrance is, but from the bottom or the tram, it seemed pretty tricky.

Anyway, I hope it happen for you. That chute is definitely SICK.
