I am headed to big sky next month and i've found significantly cheaper flights out of billings than bozeman. is there any bus or shuttle service to that airport? also, if i could get a ride to bozeman and take greyhound to billings would that drop me off near the airport? thanks to anyone familiar with this territory :)

from billings to bozeman?
sure there's options, but you probably won't save much (if anything). private limo/transportation services. check the greyhound options to get from billings to bozeman. greyhound.com if you get that far, then i can gladly take you to big sky for a reasonable compensation. 4x4 Stages goes from bozeman to big sky, but it's usually arranged pick ups from the airport i think. $60 round trip boz to BS.

bozeman to billings?
go greyhound, but i am unsure of where the greyhound station is in billings; closest to the airport. taxi it to the top of the dead end hill. that's the airport.

do you really want to drive for 3 to 4 hours after flying? is it really worth the savings, given your options?

As far as I can tell, using the various travel websites, flying out of billings saves me about $200 which is not a trivial amount right now for me. I can get a ride into bozeman, and then it is a 30 dollar, 2.5 hr greyhound ride to billings. then i just need to figure out how to get to the airport. do you think this sounds reasonable given that i am willing to deal with some headache to save a couple hundred bucks?

after the bus and taxi rides and figuring in the headaches...... not IMO.

i'm still a bit confused though. you're flying into billings and already have a means of transportation of getting to big sky? you just need a way back there? don't be too concerned about finding a ride to the airport from the greyhound station with all your gear in billings. that's not a big deal i don't think. it just may depend on the whole timing of things. you may have to sleep on the side of the street or get a hotel room. how's that for headache?

I guess i should back up a bit. this is the last leg of a three part road trip. I am flying into salt lake city and skiing 5 or 6 days at alta. I am then taking a bus to jackson hole and crashing with a friend there for a week. then we are driving up to big sky to meet a bunch of friends there. my buddy from jackson is driving back home and i will end up in bozeman. i'm trying to keep the entire trip under $2000 but flying out of bozeman jacks the round trip airfare to over $700. I can fly into SLC and out of billings for $442. add 30 bucks for greyhound and I am still saving over $200. there is a possibility i may have to spend the night in billings airport, but i've endured worse for this kind of trip before.

pfff. ya. you probably should've started with that post.......

so for a $30 greyhound, a cheap hotel, and taxi ride; you'll save $200. probably more like $100 all said and done. it's going to take a day of travelling over to billings too. is it worth skipping a potential powder day to save about $100? i guess that depends what you get while you're traveling...... but still.

you know your own tolerances and seem to know the options you have now. you'll have to make up your own mind. greyhounds su c k and sleeping in the airport with all your gear after a long hard ski trip on some pretty heavy hittin hills..... it doesn't seem worth the hassle to me.

good luck!

in the end i think you were right. after days of searching online i found some reasonable airfare from bozeman leaving friday. i'll get one less day of skiing, but i think its a good compromise. i'll post some reports when I get back if anyone is interested.

thanks for the advice.
