Days 36-38: Skiing the Steeps

Friday was a cold day and we started skiing at the crack of noon. There was no new for the last couple of days but a couple of feet had fallen in the last 5-7 days so everything was still soft. The sun came out and there was no wind so the 9 degrees didn't feel bad at all. After a quick bowl run we hit the walk on tram and headed for Marx.

Marx was soft and carvy and with the lack of any line for the tram, we hit it again and then I followed that with a solo run down 1st Gully to Krons.

After that I met the family over on Andesite to finish the day with high hopes for tomorrow as my buddy John would be meeting me at 9 sharp at Swifty to ski the Big Couloir and the North Summit Snowfields.

Saturday morning was just as cold as Friday but the afternoon was supposed to warm to the high teens. We met right at 9, took Swifty to the Triple and finally the tram where the line was still short. We got the 10:00 a.m. slot for the Big and found the snow a little wind blown but still very nice. That kind of exposure is still daunting to me and I was happy to get to the middle of the dog leg where if you fall you will still live. :-D

Right back to the tram where the line had grown significantly. After a 20-minute wait we got to the top and signed out at the Moonlight Basin shack for the North Summit Snowfields. This was the most variable snow of the day, where we had powder, wind-blasted styrofoam and extra chunky. Still a fun run nonetheless. Spent the rest of the day on Headwaters and Challenger where we found the best snow on the mountain on north and east aspects.

Sunday was a leisurely day in the bowl and on Andesite. The bowl was skiing fantastic with the help of a little wind loading.

Snow looks good... we'll be there later this week. Can you see about at least getting it above 15 degrees maybe? 8-[

although, I can compromise to above 10 without wind. :-D

Marx, Lenin, Dictator chutes all face south. Also A-Z chutes off Challenger. If it doesn't snow you want the temps to stay under 15 degrees in March. Sort of like Jackson Hole.

Yes, the runs off the south face can get firm starting this time of year. They can also be heavenly way into April. For Snowave, it should be quite pleasant for the family's stay. 15-20s up high. South Face might get some sun but you can ski the northern aspects on Challenger and Andesite (Ramcharger lift, lots of groomers for the family too) and Headwaters.
