big sky pipe session 4/2/05

i took one run. the rest of the day i hiked the pipe. the one run i took
showed spring like conditions........as expected. the jumps in the park
were reformed last night. they are now the biggest jumps that big sky
has ever had. 3 sizable booters (50'-60') and four regular sized jumps
(40'-50'). oh, there's some rails thrown in the mix as well, but i don't hit
those. about 6 different expert rails to choose from within your run
through the big sky park.

pipe was cut fresh for today. sick session today. nobody throwing down
serrious tricks, but it was still a fun day. sun beating down all day. partly
cloudy, but really it was sunny all day. mirrored lenses sunny. pipe was
slow. 3 maybe 4 good hits then all your speed is lost. i think i topped out
at about 6' or so on the first couple of hits. nobody else with much more
amplitude, but the spins and flips below the lip seemed to be crowd
pleasers. the given case of PBR was at the awards, which i had the
pleasure of getting for everyone. comp fees paid for that though.
great friggin goddang day at big sky today sessioning the pipe.
competitors put on a good show for the crowd, but it could've been
better. the superpipe has only been cut for about two weeks for people
to ride, so maybe next year there'll be some heavier sht thrown down
and an even better show to be seen. ok. since i'm half in the bag right
now i should sign off. heading down to the http://www.coldsmokeawards.com.

lifts stop running next weekend. backcountry from here on out.
oh yeah!

cold smoke awards?

hmmmmm???? kinda weak footy. they showed clips of some of what
had won certain categories, but it was kinda weak........what they showed.
im sure they had a lot of other footy to base their decisions on, but
stilll........... i hope to submit some footy next year and see what comes
of it.....???? based on what i saw tonight......... some utah crew/couple
came through with 3 awards i believe. some alta and wasatch bc footage
in the mix. good lines......... could have been some better footage shown for
our entry fees for sure. i was ther for the party though. pack in a few if
you ever happen to attend teh cold smoke awards in bozeman. not
anything like a video premier at all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wicked afta party though. some band was playing in the room next door
and i decide to check it out. bad idea/good idea. i got to spill beer all
over myself and jam out to some rockkin tunes and make a fool of
myself. another nihgt out in the bozone. cheers to that..

it's just part of the LIFESTYLE :!:

Hey Hamdog-
Hows the snow holding up? It looked like you guys had a lot of snow thru last week then it got warm? I'm just curious how long your local areas will stay open- Bridger, Moonlight, and Big Sky. I'm ready to move out there- the skiing was simply too good. Plus my second love- biking- I saw a lot of bikes in Bozeman- although being a college town that would be expected.

Cheers

moving here? geez loiuse! i guess you did have a good time on
vaca. this year, the season came late. you were here right at the right
time. it's not that good all the time.....like utah was this year. however
the scenery is just as beautiful everytime you see it, which is every day. the lifts
are suppossed to stop running next sunday at BS as well as MLB.
Bridger is done this tuesday (4/5). it usually snows after Bridger closes
and people skin up since it's nat'l forest land. not allowed to do
that at moon or bs.......without getting caught. there will be snow in the
bc and plenty of corn to go around well into June. after that the hikes get
a little longer, but snow can still be found in areas up until mid to late
july. aug-oct are the dry months when we're all jonesing. there's way to
many hiking and biking trails in the area. make sure you pick up some
bear spray though. bears don't give you a problem if you don't give them
a problem though. thier friendly animals for the most part.
it's wolves and mtn lions that scare me. never seen any out hiking
though, which is a good thing. only bears.

Do you have grizzly's, black bears or both? I've hike in the southern Tetons in the summer but had heard the grizzly bears stayed in northern Tetons and up into Yellowstone. We did see three black bears but they were more interested in gorging on berries than bothering with humans.

By the way, we had 6" of wet heavy stuff here in northeast Ohio overnight. And it was 74 degF on Wednesday. If you don't like the weather, wait a while.

mostly black bears, but griz are around. not very common though. more
so to the west and to the south, like down in the tetons. i saw my first
griz in death valley in the southern tetons while backpacking alone about
5 years ago. i think that's the only griz i've encountered though. all the
rest have been black bears. black bears aren't always black though. can
be brown just like a griz, but only the griz has the hump on thier back and
broader neck and shoulders. they are more aggressive than black
bears. i've yelled at black bears before to get the he!! out of here and
they listened. that might just piss a griz off. i hope i never get close
enough to a griz to where i have to yell at them. i might as well just kiss
my a.. goodby the bear spray might just be a seasoning for them more
than anything. i've yet to get a false charge either. i sometimes find it
more dangerous to go hiking than walking down a dark alley.

moving here? Shocked geez loiuse! i guess you did have a good time on
vaca.

I was in montana for my first time summer before last. We went up 15 through Idaho and then over to bozeman and over to flathead lake and glacier. Since our trip I keep dropping hints to my wife that we should move to montana, beautiful place. I love the big wide open valleys! AHhh....

Hey Front Range, Glad you had a great time. You hit it perfectly. Sorry I didn't have enough time for a beer, but I was too busy skiing powder at Big Sky and Showdown for two weeks straight. I'll help pay for your ticket if it snows like that everytime you visit Montana!

You're on- maybe we could take a collection for food, beer, lodging and I could announce to the group whenever I'm going to be there so all can get some Pow in. Seriously- I'll do my best to be back next year- hard to beat the Bozeman area- plus I could even do a road trip to Grand Targhee.
