i think i tried to put up the summary from another epic camp right when the boards went down... i'll throw it up just for laughs or for anyone who might care to... originally posted around aug 3rd read: another killer summer camp on the glacier... no injuries... some unreal days and a few average days combo'd up for the best camp yet, but ironically the worst snow coverage yet.
first day on snow was tuesday the 6th we skied every day through the 22nd... it snowed 5 inches on the 7th and 2 inches on the 9th... both days ended up blue bird after about 10 am... we got in a good 3 hours of fresh powder turns on the tuesday... saturday, the fresh kind of fell apart quicker but it was nice because it was much needed coverage wise...
the negative side was that the glacier was at it's lowest level ever seen by most locals... the ski down to the top of the solar coaster was shut down by the 5th... massive holes and craters were opening up our first day there in the glacier.. the frsh snow was a huge godsend, believe it or not and really made a difference because the next week it was cloudy and cool, so the fresh actually stuck around and contirbuted to the base... generally when that happens ( overcast ) it gets foggy, but that was not the case.. lost only 2 days to bad visibility.. it was however, quite cold.. hovered around 32f at the glacier , but it really saved em... they only had one pipe open this year... the bottom part of the glacier where most racers train, was in bad shape.. almost half their terrain was unskiable due to melting and crud showing up ... off the showcase lift though, life was good.. especially in john smart's lanes where it seemed like he had more snow than most other camps moving from skier's right to left... we free skied for 8 days before hitting session 5 of john's camp...john's lanes were in as good a shape as they could be considering the lack of snow.. no spots at all in the course... session 5 had us coached by ryan johnson, scott bellavance ( #5 and #7 in salt lake olympics for team canada ) john smart himself, kelly ringstad ( team canada ) new schooler fill in jay vaughn and ryan johnson again... the world mogul camp to our skier's left had more rock stars as coaches but smart's lanes were better... among the rocks stars coaching at world during the week were jeremy bloom, janne lahtela, sami mustonen, glen plake, and cooper schell...
the rowdy pirates from the high north jib camp kept the pace going all week with their usual kicking sound system and great tunes blasting out. former smart coach and now high north coach and overall stereo mc mike atkinson was an absolute riot for our three weeks there. Mikey A kept the kept the good times rolling with his constant humerous observations and occasional digs at racers, but it was all in good fun...the second half of our trip saw much more moderate temps and much more sun, with most days being in the 60's and blue bird, we finished up with 3 days of freesking on our own outside of camp, for what was definitely the best camp yet in terms of acquiring knowledge and " getting something done" as my firend gil says.. it's amazing how just when you think you are getting to the point where you think you know what you are doing, new, technical things get pointed out to you that show you just how much more you need to learn. overall great stuff for sure... life is good in whistler in july for sure... our usual 5 star accomadations at the delta whistler village suites with the room with the view of the village and the top of the glacier was again perfect... most days at the base temps were in the low 80's...ate like kings, 17 straight days of twice a day hot tubs and good looking girls...indeed life is good at whistler in july...like my friend gil also said after one particularly good day on the hill " u can stick the beach where the sun don't shine "
we'll be back for sure!!!!
3 months to mighty K ? i hope so!!!!

OK. Here's my total moron's Blackcomb glacier trip report for July 30, 2004.

I called Whistler the last Wednesday in July about the status of the glacier for the noon to 3:00 walkup business. They said something like, "It's getting kind of thin but we're open to the public until Sunday when the camps shut down."

Armed with that information, I hopped on a plane to Vancouver with all my ski gear on Thursday morning, crashed at my sister's house, and drove up to Whistler early Friday morning. I had a bad feeling at 11:00 when I saw no signs of day skiers for the 11:30 upload so I dumped the car in an illegal spot in front of the Blackcomb day lodge and walked up to the ticket house. I got an "Oh no, we closed to the general public at end of day Wednesday." I now have a 3-day comp voucher good for the 2004-2005 season but I was kinda pissed at the time.

I had significantly better luck when I went to Chile 4 weeks later.
