This was a place to do "just for the heck of it", not for any true challenge. I had interned at the Weather Observatory for summers at the top so figured it was time to check it out.

My friend Betsy and I hit the area about 1pm today. It's very urban..no parking, lots of beginners, and the feeling you are only 10 minutes from Boston.

While the area is good for beginners, I would recommend other E. MA areas for other skiers who don't want to drive far from Boston. This place just has a certain crudeness about it. Nobody knew how to ride the lift. Kids were cutting the lines and nobody was doing anything about it. A small fight broke out in the cafeteria line and the cook was screaming at the kids to stop. The lift attendent gave everybody in line a lecture on how to double up for the lift.

Aside from that, the actual skiing isn't too bad. The old double served 2 routes from the top. One is a fairly steep shot straight down, good for cruising. The other is a meandering fairly narrow trail that cascaded down the side...arguably one of the more interesting "up north" type trails in E. MA. A third slope was a beginner one served by an ancient, and I mean ancient J-bar.

Their snow report said 7/7 trails, but they only had 3 open...come on folks, truth in advertising! If you say 100% open, it better be!!! They have 2 narrow chutes that were closed, and these were probably some challenging trails!

A place to go once and thats it, or for night skiing.

Jeremy
www.nelsap.org
