Snow fell hard the night before. Some friends were the glowing with anticipation. First chair at Breckenridge was their plan. I?ve done pretty well without a pass this year, but sometimes, on nights like this, I?d welcome that fever. The one that comes with knowing that lift laps will provide many thousand turns in deep powder.
But sometimes, on days like this, no pass is no problem. If I had access to those lifts, my day would have started off with frustration.
Instead, I skinned past a hopeless little car without enough clearance to escape the buried driveway. All it takes is a foot of snow to render it useless.
I later learned that Breck got less than half the snow that was in store for me this day. Snow that would wait untouched until I arrived to track it.
So let?s go up the hill. Take a lot of breaks while breaking trail and enjoy the solitude. The quiet. The tight seclusion of evergreens weeping with the weight of white. Snow still falling.
Let?s make a run near the skin track, then go back up again.

Nobody else makes turns here. It?s all for us. We can stop and look around. Savor the draping white all over everything.
And take another run near the skin track, then go back up again.

All the way up this time. Above treeline and closer to the gray ceiling. Where holes in the roof allow light rays to give glimpses of mountains nearby.
Now say goodbye, sunshine, it?s time to go.

We?ll end up at the doorstep, like usual. This time with a few thousand feet of tracks laid 12-15? deep behind us.
So much better than trying in vain to get to a place with less snow than the driveway that trapped the car.
