I haven't posted a report in a while, because I was hoping my next one would have something good to say. But since it has now been 2 weeks since any significant snow has fallen, I'm afraid I have to report again on the disappointing conditions this year up in Whistler.
As mentioned, two weeks ago we received about 30cm overnight, and last Saturday we got 8cm, but since then it has been clear bluebird skies. While it makes for great picture taking, it sure doesn't make for epic riding. The forecast is calling for continued sun through at least the next five days. If it weren't for the pineapple express that destroyed half of January, this might be the sunniest & driest winter on record up here.
The alpine is doing OK, thanks to the cold temps the past few weeks. And the crowds have been pretty low - I guess the word is out. Run outs are all completely man-made, but are much better than they were 3 weeks ago. The backcountry seems to be variable with thick wind crusts forming on certain aspects.
Some of my favourite areas have not opened yet this season, namely Seppo's and Club 21 - the steep trees mid-mountain. It's pretty doubtful at this point that they will open at all. Even the lower Whistler bowl has been closed since early January due to lack of coverage.
Still hoping for something redeeming about this season. It's been killing me seeing Mammoth getting two foot dumps every couple of weeks. Come on!! Just a little this way, please!!!
