Breckenridge, 4-11, winter returns

Well, it blew and it snowed and it snowed some more all through Tuesday and early Wednesday morning. Temps dropped hard as well. The result was a foot of fresh at the base of Breck, as much as double that in the bowls, the disappearance of all springlike conditions and a beautiful bluebird day on Wednesday (on second read, I'll edit this to say "a beautiful bluebird day" at times. The wind was considerable. There were some squalls and cloud cover. On the whole, though, very, very nice).

For a day at least, conditions were akin to mid-winter -- cold, high winds, and absolutely great coverage everywhere. Lots of avy bombs and the Imperial Express didn't open until close to 1 p.m. (near as I could tell, I wasn't up top when it rolled).

No slush anywhere. No corn anywhere. Fantastic tree skiing. Very small crowds.

More snow supposedly coming Wednesday night into Friday morning.

Guy renting the condo next to ours skied A-Basin today and said conditions, for this time of the year, were the best he'd seen in 5-6 years.

If you're looking for good spring stuff, Summit County is rocking right now.

This is not an anomaly. Summit County (and A-Basin in particular) gets a higher proportion of its snow in April than most ski regions and at that altitude preserves it well (also A-Basin in particular). One reason I'm usually not a fan of these areas is crowds, and that issue is at its minimum in April. Winter Park and Loveland share these same attributes.

Of all the great advice I've gotten on this site, Tony, your oft-stated admonishment that money spent gambling on conditions in December is better invested in April might be the best.

That's not exactly how you put it, but the point was the same and well-taken.

I'm skiing Breck this week with my family and next week with my buddies (with a side-trip to Vail planned) and your advice is a big part of why it happened that way. And the lift tix ($325 Breck season pass) and lodging (under $100 a night for a 2BR condo) can't be beat.

And the place was empty today.

That said, I'll probably still be jonesing for a trip next December.

Restrain that jones and come back to Colorado next April. Unless you want to try Steamboat, where the odds favor early season.
