Went to Brian Head for the end of season J5 races that my daughter was in. Was able to ski around a bit Saturday and Sunday between races. Even got to hike to the Brian Head Peak (11,300'). Brian Head is all about aspect, or more precicsly, the wrong aspect. There are lifts going each side of the valley/town in the middle, but they face West (Giant Steps area) and East (Navajo side), and not really due North. Too bad. This made a difference, as Saturday had pretty sun crusted conditions, depsite the high base elevation (9500'). Sunday had about 2" new, which did improve things, but it was pretty much dust on crust. Terrain is interesting, in that it is pretty wide open, as the pine beetle has decimated the forrest and left nothing but small, spindly little trees.

My daughter had fun at her races, and the staff put on a good event. For Las Vegans, it is definately a good choice, but for us Northern Utards, we have a lot better terrain/snow at home.

I only skied there once during a blizzard.

The pine beatle really did a lot of damage - just a disaster in my view. Due to the snow, I could not tell how extensive the damage was.

What did you think?
