For the last day of our trip, my wife and I decided to ski Brighton, notwithstanding that we were staying in Park City. We always have a soft spot in our hearts for Brighton, and I was also curious how the mini-drought was affecting it. I had skied there Jan. 31, so I could make a well-informed comparison. I expected that the altitude (relative to the PC group) and the fact that many areas at Brighton are well-shaded would preserve the snow pretty well. In fact, it turned out better than I expected. In the shaded areas (e.g., runs off Snake Creek) and the area to far skier's left off Milly (Exhibition), the surface was exactly as I remembered it at the end of Jan -- excellent packed powder. But even the exposed slopes (off the Great Western, Little Milly) were skiing great. They were a bit hard early on, but perfect in the afternoon. Surfaces on all runs were far better than what we had seen at DV and Canyons. In fact, the only deterioration in conditions were that the troughs in the moguls had of course gotten considerably deeper, which meant that some more rocks had gotten exposed. So in the ungroomed areas, you had to pick your way a bit carefully. And as Admin noted at Alta, the skies cleared in the afternoon, so we were able to keep skiing all day with no loss of viz. All in all, a great day, and a bit of education for me on snow preservation!
