this is a bit late, but i figured why should i rush since they closed the day after i skied there. for their last weekend in operation, burke was 100% open with no thin cover any where on the mountain except on Fox's Folly under the quad, which was still easily skiable.

the only reason i could imagine as to why burke closed so early was financial reasons with not enough lift tickets being sold to cover operational costs.

that being said, i think the entire Northern Kingdom of Vermont showed up to Burke for their Pond Skimming! fortunately, the vast majority of these people were not skiing that afternoon, but mearly spectators in the spectacle that is Pond Skimming.

the line grew to an amazingly long (for Burke) one minute long at times. everyone on the mountain had a HUGE freakin' grin on their faces.

this was an amazing day of skiing with perfect blue skies and soft snow (mash potato at times). temperature was perfect for Pond Skimming around 60 or so.

for pictures, movies, and a highly detailed trip report:
http://www.stormloader.com/theway/pictures/burke2002b.htm

Enjoyed the photos, but FYI both movie links are broken.

You may be interested to know that a full-feature story on Burke will be published at the magazine within the next few weeks.

RE: Links. i have gotten them to work on my end, but everyone else is having problems with them. i'm working on switching them to a different server, but good reliable free file hosting takes a lot of searching. i'll re-double my efforts as those movies of SuperMan flying over the pond and Bull Winkle biting it big time are pretty funny.

RE: Burke Article. sweet. as with everyone that loves the mountain, on one hand i am so glad to see any type of press or good word about that mountain. it's a hidden gem and i love having a place like that crowd free, but on the other hand, more people need to get up there if the mountain is going to thrive like it should.

cheers!
