We arrived at the small lot on the Duxbury side with a true choice of where to park - we were the only ones there. We geared up and were walking to the trailhead by 9. BTW, both of us have Ascension skins. As we were putting on our skis a couple cars came up the road. Visions of virgin powder were dancing in our heads.

Up the Dean to Monroe, then a bit of off trail through open woods. We made good time, we were under the cliffs at the base of the hump in under 90 min. Now came the hard part. Nick had never skied the Hump, and I had done it once last year with a guided group, as part of a NATO clinic. At a favorable looking spot we de-skinned and started down. Nope - wrong spot. A few good turns and we ran back into the Monroe trail. After a false start or two we skinned back up. Went back up Monroe, traversed past our earlier mistake, and were ready for some real skiing. Well there is such a thing as being too enthusiastic, we went 20 to 50 yards too far. That's a major oops. We had a few REALLY sweet turns. Then, we wound up in a gully. After beating our way down the gully I realized where we were - "We're F***ED". We skinned up - again, switch backed out of the gully, and traversed back to the glade we had intended to ski down.

Nick was in go home mode, and I was bummed for getting lost. We skied down, signed out, and shot back to the car.
Well. That was a learning experience. Back at the ski house before 3. I offered Nick a beer, but he figured as tired as he was, he better not have one before driving home (he had to work Mon.). Once I stopped moving I realized I was beat to $#1T. My legs were so sore there was no comfortable position. After some Vitamin I, a few beers, and my feet up in front of a nice fire, I felt a bit better.

At least I'll know where I'm going next time.
