Ahhh... Cannon Mt. A eastern skier's dream? Sometimes. On Saturday it wasn't bad!

I woke up early Saturday morning, around 4:00am. I had a $15 lift ticket voucher that would expire on the 24th, so I decided to make the 3 hour journey north to Cannon because $15 was worth it. (My family lives near Cannon, so it worked out as a good excuse to come spend Christmas anyway.)

During my drive I was preparing for a large crowd of "non-skiing" skiers to contend with. Much to my surprise, when I arrived, there wasn't a crowd. Actually, it more closely resembled a typical weekend day. "ok" I thought to myself, if there isn't a crowd, then the mountain is probably icy, which Cannon is legendary for! Cannon isn't a tourist mountain anyway... it's a diehard skiers mountain!

After the first run, the verdict was 'no ice'. A quick ride up the new HS Quad revealed a nice mix of man made snow and some real powder higher on the mountain. It wasn't icy! Surprisingly for Cannon and everybody else skiing, the snow was great, especially for Dec.

Cannon had great snow, no lift lines, but the weather was brutal! The summit was in the clouds and it was very windy, with a wind chill well below 0. The front diamonds (zoomer, gary's, rocket, avalanche, PF) were awesome! They were actually so nice they were more like cruising runs. A few trips up the zoomer triple chair made for some quick turns.

I met up with a friend, Betsy M. from Boston. We cruised the mountain from 9:00am - 2:00pm. We only made it to the summit 3 or 4 times because the weather was nasty up there.

I think Cannon is going to have a great winter.

--
