catskills?

looking for input...is it worth a multi-day trip to any of the catskill resorts? it would be a 3 1/2 to 4 hour drive for me...too much for a day trip, considering the terrain is probably not "2 more hours in the car" better than elk mountain....so, i'm wondering if any of the resorts have enough to keep an advanced intermediate type and his green-circle wife entertained for more than one day...if not for my desire to try new places, i'd probably have my own question answered, but was hoping some with experiences at these places would be willing to share their thoughts, especially which out the bunch they consider the 'best'...having done my own research, i'd say possibly bellayre or windham, but really i don't know...thanks in advance!

I skied Bell yesterday. Had a great DAY, i couldn't imagine a multi day trip there.. Like Rob said, 1.5 hrs or so up the Thruway is Gore. Which is a much better option imho..

Of course, the Catskills are going to have better general conditions and terrain than Elk (and you can't ski the trees there like at Belleayre), but I wouldn't go the extra miles unless it was right after a storm. Same for Gore -- a silly idea for this guy unless North Creek has just gotten some decent snow.

I passed up Belleayre today because of tonight's storm, which is tracking south (10-14 inches, so they claim at the moment)... so I'll be heading to Camelback, PA after work tomorrow. I'd never go there otherwise, but I'll take powder at a dopey hill rather than hard and fast at a better mountain.

Snowin'? I'm goin! :)

It is true that the conditions this weekend will be better this weekend, however, in light of the fact that Box297 wanted more terrain I think Gore would satisfy that.

The question was not simply "more and better terrain for a beginner and upper intermediate," but also "is it worth the extra drive time." If you're going to send him on an extra two-hour drive to Gore, he might as well just go straight to Stowe or Sugarbush.

Given the abilities and preferences (didn't see any request for trees), I'd send Box to Windham. If you go there from mid-March to the season close, that icy base becomes soft, it's got two HSQs, 1,400 continuous vertical (I don't believe the 1,600 reported), no crowds, lots of accommodation and restaurant options, etc. It's certainly better than Elk and it takes about two days to ski it out.

This is another case of people filling in the blank with their own preferences instead of addressing what's requested.

Did this question originally come from Alpine Zone?

james d pretty much hit it on the head...if i'm going to drive more than a couple hours i might as well head to northern vermont...when i compare 4+ hours to get to a windham or bellayre, versus 7 to stowe, etc., it makes it seem like an easier decision, but leaves windham as an option if we could only get away for a couple days
james, wouldn't mountain creek f/k/a vernon valley/great gorge be a better option for you? it's closer and it looks like this storm will dump more there than camelback...too bad they closed down 'class' action park though...that place was great

I'm assuming the OP is wondering about this weekend.

If you aren't familiar with Gore, and are looking for an indicator for conditions look to see how many tree runs are open. Even if you aren't a tree skier. Right now there aren't any. It's because there hasn't been any snow to speak of since the last NCP event (on Weds or Thurs?). Limited TRs from the Mtn on Fri/Sat weren't favorable.

While Gore will probably get a few inches out of todays storm VT will get more. If you don't want to drive all the way to No VT central or southern VT are farther than Gore but will get more snow and have better conditions this weekend.

The storm tracked far east of where it was supposed to. I think the proverbial "wheelhouse" was on Long Island.

Prospect Park is looking mighty fine. Shame I'm still recovering, otherwise I would hike my way up there and ski all the little 50 foot hills. Probably a better bet would be a little x-c over the brooklyn bridge.

South Orange was supposed to get 12-14 and we ended up with only six inches.

I wonder if Maine or NH did better?

GET IN YOUR CAR AND DRIVE TO THE CATSKILLS RIGHT NOW!!!

haha...awesome...that's what i like to hear!

so it sounds like windham is probably the best pick for someone driving a ways and looking for more than one day of skiing

as it is i'll probably head the 20 minutes up to bear creek f/k/a doe mt. for an afternoon session...we got about 6-7" and still coming down, but starting to slow...not too often we get a PA pow day, so i gotsta take advantage \:D/
