Off and on snow today, not much but for cat skiing it doesn't need to be much. It was gray again but we didn't have nearly as much of the bad visibility as yesterday. When we did the snow was more forgiving and there were no mishaps. Not sure what might have been going on yesterday, but the owner came out on our cat for half of today. The calf muscle still makes its presence known but pain is much less than yesterday and it didn't swell much even then. No impact on skiing, and with no evidence of anything serious I hit the hot tub after skiing.

We started in Enchanted Forest, a burn area near the lodge which I've probably skied every year I've been here. In the usual cold temperatures its SW exposure is rarely relevant. It was smooth for the low angle start but when the pitch steepened there was sun crust underneath. One other run had a section like that also. Otherwise we stuck to at least partial north facing and the snow was consistently good. The last 4 runs were 1,000 foot drops off a ridge, ending in Pillow Talk, a buried boulder field that offered numerous air opportunities to the younger skiers and riders.

http://www.thedesignblog.org/entry/tree ... omealmost/ Scroll down after seeing the tree bed. Someone needs to invent a ski bed. You need one of these to rest up! Why anyone does these trips is beyond me. I like knowing where I am going, on established trails! I have not enjoyed gasping for air in deep powder or ramming into something unseen! I find my thrills elsewhere...................................in sane behavior. Crocker, no one on Firsttracks wants to loose you. Be careful! :-k

There are these wonderful things called maps. Apparently they've been around a while. I hear they even have them on computers now. :-"
Supposedly there's this other new-fangled invention that even let's you know where you are on a map. Uses satellites or some such tomfoolery. If you ask me I think it's just more Democratic Party propaganda.

Seriously, who could possibly be interest in a trip where you go all the way up a mountain without lifts with NO GROOMED RUNS and no other people around? Worst of all, I hear they actually make you go to parts of the mountain where there are no tracks to follow down. Honestly, sounds horrible.

When you scroll down after seeing the tree bed what you find is something pretty suggestive. I've had to decide someone needs a cold shower more than she needs a map. There are no trail maps where "the reckless one" has been skiing.

Yes there are maps and GPS systems. I have gone with patrols in the spring when the snow is scanty and all obstacles and unseen objects are visible. It is catch the last of the season safely. We had a driver to pick us up! My friends where I patrol always send two patrols down in the woods, non groomed or observed runs. Won't prevent anything, but,
at least we won't be left there. I love the trees that are well known paths in spring. Whatever turns you on, however. It is a free Country even for skiers to do as they please in the back country! It still remains beyond me why anyone would pay all that money to be in a lot of danger. I ski free safely! That is the ultimate to me, safe, free and helping others!

Honestly if those folks are paying all that money they probably check out the trails before snowfall. If you look at the Chatter Creek website it appears they save a place for those that don't want chairlifts and other skiers. I mean, you have to get something for all that money above and beyond hiking out there for yourself, cutting through the trees, or skiing the plain old groomers. Their add talks about all the medical equipment on the snow cats, sort of funny! I don't have that need to come close to death daily to feel validated. I see that side of life every day in my work! But, every skier has to decide what they want. I think being informed is what it is all about so that you can make choices of runs, etc. Avalanche classes are great, talking to skiers, etc. I have to explain to skiers why they may not have the ability, or why they can't walk down 1500 vertical with their family in snow deeper than their eldest child fairly regularly. It never ends, just so long as they know what they are getting into and then can make informed choices.

Thanks for your emails and calls and letting us know you are OK. Better you than me out there!

My boyfriend takes hot showers and so do I. I did not read your emails, forwarded them to Tony for you.The bed is very suggestive of rest, what sane people do when they are injured, not ski on it. But, not so injured if they can ski. All the norm in Big Bear, teenagers going back on the mountain with casts, splints, fractures................! I have always joked Tony: Oh, well, what does it matter. You are going to die in an avalanche anyway. I hope not, but, likely for those back country skiers. After they are dead, I don't go get them like some patrols who like to get their own. I let the SAR crowd do it, their job. I won't die to get the dead. My focus in the living! Thanks!

Where do you ski? Do you ski like that as well?

I suppose it is the craze with the Darwin law of natural selection and survival of the fittest at work! I ski for pleasure, not escape or mood altering danger! I hate hospitals, injuries, pain, infection, frostbite, suffocation. Geez. I like living!

How can a nurse function if she hates hospitals, etc.? And by the way, in case you hadn't noticed, I had already forwarded copies of those emails to Tony.

Tony tells me you're moving to New York this week. Shouldn't you be packing for that? Too little to you name, I guess?

Sorry, I meant "your" name of course. Don't want to have to accumulate amends to make if I ever need a 12 step problem. Wanna step in it some more?

Pretty sure a lot of us might like to know at this point who this boyfriend you mention taking hot showers with is. Does he have a name? My boyfriend is Tony Crocker. Who is yours, this week?

Sorry, Mark, hadn't seen your high sign before submitting the last post

Ahem. ](*,)

As entertaining as this has been for all of us today (and believe me, I know for a fact that many of our regulars, yours truly included, have been enormously entertained by all of this), I'm afraid that this is topic thread is straying widely from our stated purpose around here. As one forum regular emailed to me today, "This is better than reality TV," but I really don't feel like using our forums as a means for the two of you to battle this out.

In defense of my behavior, I wanted no battles, certainly no public ones, which is why I emailed her. But not only would she not reply in a private email, she claimed to not even read them. :-s
