Spring has sprung (at least for a day) and Vince and Myself decided to hit up Berthoud Pass for some chuting. We started off from the top of the pass hiking up to Russell. The small chutes on the North side were looking good and tested stable so we gave them a go. Vince was liking it.
A look back at our lines through the chutes.
We skinned across to the ridge between Current Creek and Second Creek. The big chute going down to Second Creek tested out very stable, so I got my turn.
Another set of lines.
Then we broke for lunch and I took a few scouting line shots. The Couloir lookers left of the big cornice looks like a nice line.
So does this hallway. I am going to have to get a shot of someone blowing through this.
We finished off the day skinning over to South Cone above First Creek. This was the intended line.
I say intended because after digging some pits and other stability tests it was obvious we would be rolling the dice quite a bit more than on the other lines. After much discussion we decided it wasn't worth it and found another safer line nearby. Not even 50 yards away, but much more stable.
We rode out first creek through some of the soggiest mankiest snow imaginable down to the highway and a quick hitchhike back to the summit.
It was a good day of chuting for sure. 8)
