This is why, unless you are a teenager you never show up for the first couple of weekends!

Second in Colorado to open is Loveland, but not quite how you might think. As opposed to Admins news story, Loveland really opened today:

http://skiracing.com/stories/loveland-first-resort-in-nation-to-open-for-training/

They had been targeting Monday for training during late last week but couldn't quite get there until yesterdays cold weather. Still low angle terrain for the most part, but something that might be worth showing up to for first turns. Lane fees > lift ticket sales at this time of year.

IF you were that desperate for turns, bring skins...you'd probably get 2-3 runs for each one that crowds gets

All uphill is currently forbidden at the Basin (until more terrain opens). Can't imagine the likelihood of a crash with uphillers, skiers, snowmaking gear, snowmobiles or whatnot all on the same hill.

Are the crowds due to the Epic Pass sales? Is Loveland as crowded on their WROD?

Yes Epic passes and a weekend opening are the cause of that cluster. Loveland would be crowded, but not that crowded on it's WROD (maybe close to it if it was first to open). They'll still get fairly big crowds till at least early Nov when the big resorts open up.

Seems to me that the real story is Wolf Creek's opening this weekend on a 22" all natural base. If I lived in CO, I'd be tempted! They even say they're opening Alberta Peak area for hike-to, but with just 22", I can't believe that area will have sufficient coverage for anyone who cares about life or limb or their skis!

It's really just the flat stuff over there that is opening; so not nearly as tempted as you might think given the 4.5 hr drive.

I suspect the "alberrta" area opening is strictly to try to skier compact things for later season Avi danger so bring your skis with the edges already torn off!

Still, nice to see enough natural building up already... although after Friday things are supposed to dry out for the rest of Oct out here (ironically Denver has higher probability of snow around Halloween than around Christmas).

Annnnd.... Abasin now goes top to bottom already, about 2-3 weeks earlier than typical. Still way too crowded on weekends even with some relief provided by Loveland's 2 trails for me though.
