Interesting. I had never seen Crater Lake, so I stopped by for ~20 minutes on the second day of my month-long road trip. That day was January 12, while jibmaster was on his trek! At the ranger office they said snowfall was 34% of normal to date and snowpack about 20%. It looked very treacherous, so I did not get too near the edge to take pictures. The pics below sweep from the west to the east side of the lake.

It looks like there's nothing in the way of snow on the far side of the lake. The ice and thin snowpack must have made for a very challenging trip.

Nice shots Tony! That was my first time there as well. I've done a quite a few backcountry ski trips, but nothing compares to this. Traveling for days, in a circle. The views are the same, but the angle keeps changing...
Gotta do it again! O:)

Nice pictures; looks like an adventure! I'm wondering if putting on the skins might have helped prevent breaking through the crust, since you wouldn't have needed to push down to set the skis as you have to in order to get the scales to grip the snow?

I was at an independent brewery in Queenstown NZ last night wearing my Bend Brewing Company cap. A young guy behind the bar excitedly told me he spent last winter in Bend. He proceeded to show me photos of him skiing Crater Lake. They were spectacular. He went with a guided group.

I didn’t know until last night skiing Crater Lake was a thing. Another thing to add to the bucket list.
