Daily Flights to Mammoth

How long had this been in the works? Seems like they've been talking about it forever.

Funny, in this advertisement, it sounds like avoiding a speeding ticket is more of a carrot than $4.50/gallon gas. I've heard stories about speed traps on the way to Mammoth.

Probably not my encounter with CHP on 395?

There was a protracted battle over environmental impact of expanding the Mammoth airport. I've always been a skeptic due to Mammoth's chronic winds, which are still a factor. Where will those flights be diverted during bad weather? I've always thought the airport should be in desert climate Bishop, which at ~45 minutes distance is not that different for many mountain resort airports.

Driving is still cheaper with 2+ people. I do need to remind myself that I live on the right side of L.A. for an easy getaway. For someone in the South Bay beach cities, using LAX will avoid a lot of rush hour aggravation.

The one-hour-and-five-minute flight departs Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) daily at 2:20 p.m. and arrives at Mammoth Yosemite Airport (MMH) at 3:25 p.m. The return flight leaves Mammoth at 4:05 p.m. and arrives at LAX at 5:10 p.m.
Time of day seems wrong. It should be 2-3 hours later. Could be they are worried about weather and want the turnaround in Mammoth to be during daylight hours.

From this TR - Mammoth June 29 to July 4, 2006:

Ah yes, yesterday drive from Las Vegas > Hoover Dam > Lake Mead > Valley of Fire > stunk in traffic for maybe 2 hours on I-15 east of Vegas(accident / travel less than 2 miles during this time) > Vegas toward Beatty-Big Pine-Mammoth LAkes. Total time: 12 hours. I actually left Vegas at 5pm and got to Bishop at 10pm. Didn't stop to eat during that time, that road is in the middle of nowhere. Even the Cottontail Brothel is out-of-business.

I made it to Mammoth at 10:45pm, I stop to grab a pizza on the go in Bishop. Ah yes, I remember Tony talking about my driving between Jackson and SLC last winter, he said I was being conservative with the 85mph (speed limit) that I was driving. Well, guess what? I was stopped by the police right after I arrived on highway 395 (between Big Pine and Bishop). This could have cost me mucho dollares. I think I was driving around 80mph, but contraly to Nevada where the speed limit was 75mph, here it was at 65mph.

My response from the same TR.

I have collected a substantial number of tickets on 14 and 395 over the years. I usually put it in cruise control around 80 but recommend scrupulously observing the speed limit driving through the Owens Valley towns. IMHO 85mph is the point at which you are increasingly likely to attract the attention of the CHP on 14 and 395.

Adam added to his collection this year with commutes between San Diego and Mammoth.
